Avenging Spider-Man #5

Zeb Wells is really an underrated writer, and pretty much entirely due to him, Avenging Spider-Man's been a pretty fun book so far. Issue #5 was particularly good.







An antiquarian in Brooklyn has dug up one of the comics Steve drew when he was in art school, back before World War II, and reproductions of the pages ran in the Daily Bugle. Most of the Avengers are pretty amused, but Spider-Man's particularly interested, because the way he sees it, it's something he has in common with Cap.

They were both pretty geeky kids, but the way Cap sees it, the old comic pages are kid stuff. He compares it to playing with your first chemistry set, and Peter's response is that, well, he does still do that from time to time.

They go off and have a fairly routine mission fighting the Serpent Society, which has not been having a good year so far, and when they get back:

Yeah, this was quite possibly one of the best Spider-Man stories in a long, LONG time.

But an S_D post about this issue without posting the panel with Peter and Steve close together and Dat Spider Ass at the forefront? I am disappoint.

I remember reading previews of Avenging Spider-Man, thought them funny, and then my goldfish memory struck again.

Wait, the Avengers know SPidey's face now... not going to question how they forgot? Or how Jarvis missed his chance with May? I know the "feeble minded spell" was broken when Pete went on that air with his powers but not when he unmask to the FF, but they would remember not being able to remember... Or did they all address that already?

Strange and Tony helped him with the "spell" so I would imagine everyone in the Avengers knew that he caused them to forget.

He revealed his identity (again) to the New Avengers a couple of years ago, and it's probably not a big deal to go maskless around Steve.

On another note, I did a double take when I saw the dedication at the end of the last scan. Then I wibbled inside. The name initially drew me off, but now I'm thinking that I should pick up an issue.

Funny this comes up, I was going through some old Captain America issues for my forthcoming Serpent Society post, and Steve making a living as a comic artist was an ongoing subplot. Nice to see it addressed here.
