Newsarama have a preview for SA #26

Beast has a nightmare about Jean's original Dark Phoenix rampage, and being a nightmare it ends badly... They mention (annoyingly) that the original aim of the Phoenix was to burn things on a cosmic scale... so much for the "Avatar of Life", but I think we know that ship has sailed thanks to this ruddy crossover.

At least Brian is defending Rachel's time as the Phoenix. Beast defending Jean is in character, but given that she DID go Dark Phoenix and Rachel never did, I'm not sure that his POV has much going for it.

And then in another WTF moment.... Thor walks in... or rather reels, along with Valkyrie.

Now Thor doing a bit of carousing I can sort of see, and I know Norse legend tends towards the fatalistic, but even so... this seems most unlike him. He's faced down Ragnarok, he'd be girding his lois, not drowning his sorrows.

Though I like Brian acknowledging that him getting drunk is never a good idea.

Interesting art style here, a pleasant change from the norm.

...Doesn't Thor know Captain Britain is a recovering alcoholic? I thought pretty much every super hero knew that,

There might be some debate on that.

Alan Davis is quite firm that he never wrote Brian as an alcoholic. Brian has some issues with alcohol use when he's depressed (Such as his extended bender when Betsy died) and he prefers not to drink alcohol if he has a choice because, as he says here, he's an arsehole when he does, but I don't think that's quite the same as alcoholism.

Alan Davis didn't but a few others have including Chris Claremont. They even did a flashback issue in Excalibur where Spider-Man and Brian were roomies and Peter eventually kicked him out for alcoholism.

I guess it depends on the writer, Like how Beast's look flip-flops too.

In Brian's first appearance in American comics, Marvel Team-Up #65, back in 1978.

Huh, cool. Thanks. I don't know why, but I just find that very bizarre.

The...70s I think? Started in an old Marvel Team up. Cap was still wearing the lion outfit.

Huh, so Harry wasn't the only person with substance abuse that Spidey just decided to discard, go figure.

If Brian isn't prepared to accept that he has a problem, then there's not really a lot that can be done (The first step being admitting that you HAVE a problem), especially when the person is a passing acquaintance, who is the Atlantic and several hours time difference away.

Marvel Team up #65. Back when comics were only 35 cents!

Then in Excalibure, they did a flashback to Brian's semester at ESU where Pete confronts him about his alcoholism and how Brian nearly had to drop out of college because of it,

Paul Cornell specifically retconned it during CB&MI-13.

Retconned the alcoholism in, or retconned it out?
