Pretty much, Shaolin Robot was a clockwork automaton of a warrior designed to one of many to be entombed with an Emperor. The Emperor decreed that the designer of the robots also be entombed with him, and before he died the designer was able to reprogram one of the automatons with higher functioning. Instead of 8 bit binary coding, he used the six, three-digit, binary codes developed from the I-Ching.

He's been upgraded since then, but the principle remains the same.
