Spider-Men - more info about the crossover

USAtoday.com has further update as to who is the Big Bad that is bringing the Spider-men from two very different universes together.

"Mysterio, the nefarious magic man who has been a Spider-Man villain since the hero's earliest days, is the guy who finds a rift between the regular Marvel Universe and the alternate-reality Ultimate Universe, a plot device that is central to the upcoming Spider-Men."

If you read further into the story, it sounds like the writers really put some heart into this, a true "miles stone" (pun intended) for the heroes who wear the webs.

When it comes to stuff like BND/OMD and some of the stuff Peter's done since, bad writing becomes linked to the perception of the character. So when Peter comes out with wheatcakes bullshit, has sex with a woman in a hotel room they've commandeered whilst demanding they keep their masks on, rips Kraven's wife's face off (from what I remember) and numerous other pieces of bullshit - including stuff like letting the new Kraven think his roommate was Spider-Man - he's a bad character and person. Ult!Gwen is, also, too young for him and it'd just be completely skeevy and weird. Imagine Peter of the 616, who was basically defined by that fucking bridge incident, dumping all his expectations on a sixteen year old girl who doesn't know who the fuck he is, he has that little in common with her Peter.

A few things: He didn't rip her entire face, just kind of took the first few layers of skin off, which was understandable. She had just killed a young girl he knew, one of the people he trusted most, and his clone, who he saw as a brother. Plus, he was in terrible physical condition, and there was a lot of magic shit going on that may have affected his mind. And with the roommate thing, he was actually impersonating Spider-Man, irc. I don't remember him setting anything up. He was going around committing crimes dressed as Spider-Man. And while the bridge definitely greatly influenced him, I wouldn't say he is defined by it.

Nope. In the Kraven's First Hunt story, Vin gets abducted by Ana because she thinks he's Spider-Man. Peter promptly dresses as Daredevil to go and get him back, and comes across as a real ass with the explanation he gives as to what was going on at the end of the story.

And 616!Peter is totally defined by the bridge. Totally. As much as Uncle Ben.

It has something to do with a panel early on in the BND fiasco (I still want MJ back mr editorial, I ain't forgetting) and the phrase "what, no wheatcakes?" coupled with a jerk expression.

....MJ is back. She's a major supporting member of the cast, one of Peter's closest friends, and even helped him save the world in the "Spider-Island" event. So I have no idea what you mean by wanting her back.

Also, I still don't get it. What does wheatcakes have to do with One More Day?

Wanting her back as the way she was before the OMD fiasco happened. Not her coming in and saying "Wow, isn't Carlie great? You sure know how to pick 'em, Pete!"

You mean they're married again and living together with Aunt May who knows that Pete is Spider-Man?

I mean her character and personality are the same as before, with the only difference being the status quo. And while Peter and Mary-Jane aren't married or even lovers, they are still close friends and very dear to one another, which a) is infinity better then writing her out of Spider-Man all together, and b) a big step in the direction of making them a couple again, which I have little doubt will happen in the future, for the same reasons Joe Q. was so insistent that he had to break them up.

The only thing I don't see coming back is Aunt May finding about Spidey's secret identity, if only because that story has already been told three times now, and I can't think of a way to re-tell that story without it coming off as a rehash of what has been done before.

I rarely ship, but I think I'm still harbouring feelings of resentment over the break up, especially in how it was handled. Admittedly I haven't picked up amazing spider-man in a while, but I try and keep in the loop. I think I just poorly worded it.

I found this review which references the line about the wheatcakes and the problems some people had with the arc lower down the page (and it was Brand New Day, sorry). It became something of a minor meme for that version of Peter for a while.
