Avengers Academy versus New X-Men

The Avengers land on Avengers Academy, bringing the X-Men students recruits (along with the X-Club and Sebastian Shaw) with them for safe keeping while everyone tries to find Hope. There is much awkwardness on the topic of how to deal with them. Laura isn't very happy with the position Logan put her in.

Laura and Sooraya re-aquaint themselves with one another.

Hercules to the rescue!

Oh, Laurie, you're not fooling anyone.

Then Loa and Mettle bond over surfing

d'awww.

And Finesse and Laura do some bonding as well:

Very nice issue overall. Looking forward to its development. Gage seems to be at his best in events tie in it seems, last time I enjoyed this title as much was during Fear, Itself.

I'm not an artist, but I've taken a lot of art classes over the years: life drawing, painting, that kind of thing. It is remarkably difficult to draw somebody who looks identifiably Asian without making them look like a racist stereotype, particularly depending on one's individual style.

Grummett has mad chops in many other areas, but he's hardly the only person who struggles with this.

I'm not an artist, but couldn't you just angle the eyes slightly so that they're not perpendicular to the nose?

That isn't really how Asian facial structure works. It's not a question of slanting the eyes; the basic facial design is the same, but an Asian character's eyelids are shaped differently. They will typically have slightly less of the eyeball exposed when their eyes are open than a Caucasian or African would.

Let's look at somebody who does it well: Sean Chen. Rumiko Fujikawa would be identifiably Asian even if there was no dialogue on the page, but look at the relatively subtle differences between her eyes and Tony's. On a full-size pencil drawing, that's a matter of two very small lines. Draw them further apart and there's no detectable difference; Rumiko might as well be Roxanne Fielding from east Jersey. Draw them too close together, and she looks like she's either squinting or about to pose a terrible threat to our Pacific Theater operations.

Ah, ok then. I knew about the eyelid fold (should, seeing as I am Asian) but I didn't consider how it challenges artists.
