Apokolips led by Steppenwolf has wiped out Metropolis and pretty well conquering Earth and in a last mad desperate gamble. The Trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman manage to free the world from the Parademon grip, sacrificing themselves in the process in grand fashion.







Five years later on the anniversary of the Trinity deaths to save the earth.

Kinda makes all the pre-release worries about fridging Lois and Selina to give Clark and Bruce angst look pretty irrelevant now...

Glad it's not going to be another Trinity title.

You know, between reading an interview by Robinson yesterday and reading this issue, I think I figured out what this book is and why it feels so weird.

With the exception of their first appearences, the JSA has pretty much always been the grandfather figures of the DCU. What Robinson seems to be doing is creating a contemporary and modern take on the original JSA when they were young and vital.

It's certainly different from what we've seen before, but it doesn't make it less valid, and I'm really kinda digging it.

The only thing good about this book was Nicola Scott's art, but even that's not enough to entice me into buying #2.

It's a very odd choice, given we already have the fledgling hero team coming together in JLA. JSA following in their footsteps seems a bizarre choice.

And Jay and Joan as a young couple, just starting out (Well, not even a couple here) five years AFTER the Trinity died? Weird....

The art is beautiful, and the tears streaming down Helena's face as her Dad says goodbye, that packs a punch....

So, what is the super-identity of the girl?

Wait, our here is the guy? Damnit, there goes my interest.

On a more serious note, if they had presented this with a more serious note like the first couple of pages and forgot instead about recasting old characters as 20 year old retypes of Hal Jordan, I might be interested in it. As it is though, nah.

Aside from the killing off of the Earth-2 Trinity (doesn't it seem Diana has been killed in that same manner - from behind, with a sword before?) after hyping them complete with press-releases there's the other portrayals...

Was Joan and Jay the longest-lasting marriage in the DCU (and wasn't she a blonde when younger)? They were two characters who actually aged in real time as in the Golden Age they were very young and then aged into their 90s.

And now this - Joan's break-up sex and goodbye, loser, I'm outta here to Jay. Really, Robinson? I mean....really. WTF? If even Joan and Jay can't survive the reboot there really must be some kind of internal editorial directive vis-a-vis marriage (and its non-existence) in DC Comics.

I love Nicola Scott. But I have zero interest in this.

With Jay and Joan, like I said, that was how the character started out--as a college student who's girl just left him.

I seem to recall something similar happening during the opening cinema for the DCU MMO--she was stabbed in the back by Deathstroke, I think.

Diana was actually electrocuted by Luthor. Superman got stabbed with kryptonite in the back though.

Well, if you think about it from the original Golden Age, the Trinity did come first, with two of them serving on the JSA. So if it's a full-on modern take on the JSA, it works in that respect.

Who's to say they don't get back together? Maybe he makes something of himself as The Flash and she sees the changes he's made?

On a whim, I picked this up. And to be honest, I didn't think it was that bad. I actually like the idea that the Trinity fell and now there's a new crop of heroes that are going to come out. As I said in response to icon_uk, comparing it with the original JSA, Superman and Wonder Woman were both members originally, so this is sort of a modern take on that.

And of course, Nicola Scott knocks everything right out of the park.

So yeah, I'm not 100% sold on it, agreeing with EyeonComics.com's 6/10, but it's solid enough that I'll probably try the next few issues.

Joan and Jay are 21. It's obvious to me that part of his "Hero's Journey" as the Flash on this world will be to win her back.

Still, she definitely came off as a bit...unpleasant in this issue.

Poor Jay Garrick. If only his woman knew her place, and didn't go off to have a career and life of her own. Man, bitches, huh? Guess he'll just have to become yet another blandly forgettable 'gritty' superhero to heal the wound. Wee lamb.

Maybe. It's weird to see them at this supposed age (younger than Hal Jordan and Barry Allen). And I actually liked the idea that was prevalent in the Golden Age where there were a lot of couples - Dian Belmont/Sandman, Shiera Sanders/Carter Hall, Inza and Kent Nelson, and Joan Williams and Jay Garrick who were helpmates and partners all the way from beginning to end.

Except the Trinity have been dead for five years after presumably having a suitably long career, leaving a Robin and a Supergirl/Power Girl behind, BEFORE Flash first appears.

Sure, but I'm just talking about the core Trinity. They didn't join the team, no, but they still came first. That's still a basic grounding parallel to the Golden Age JSA.

I hate "hero's journeys" that involve "winning" a girl.

Women are not prizes for males to win or own to support their egos.

I think the difference (for me, at least) is that we're really NOT seeing the formation of the Justice League as it happens, while apparently we will see the Society form. Also, the powers that be don't seem all that consistent when it comes to Earth 1 timelines and all, whereas maybe with Earth 2 the lack of too many cooks will make a more coherent and accessible world. I liked it quite a bit.
