...Okay, now Archie officially reeks of desperation, IMO.

Archie comics have been pretty good recently. Moves like the introduction of Kevin Keller have payed off well.

Kevin, sure, that seems to have been done pretty well. Pretty much everything else after that just seems to me to be them going, "okay, what can we do now that will make news?"

The mainstream media talks about movies, televisions, and occasionally even books 24/7. If a wider variety of comics are getting mainstream press, I'm not seeing a problem. (So long as it's not yet another patronizing article called Bang! Zoom! Comics Aren't Just For Kids!! or yet another treatise about how Men Are From Mars And Dig Comics, But Chicks Just Like Flowers And Fluffy Bunnies From Venus.)

"Fluffy Bunnies from Venus" would be a great name for a band... especially if it was a Goth Metal band... :)

Call it what you will, but I've been enjoying the stories.

I currently pick up *five* books from the company, more than my DC & marvel lists combined.

Why? They've done crossovers before haven't they?

And it's a common enough thing to do, even the modern Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon had an episode where they travelled back in time to the original cartoon, and had much sport with the different look of the animations styles between the two eras.

Of course citing Alvin and the Chimpunks for anything might not be the best move I've ever made....

This one image removed from context and taken on its own could seem a step too far. However, within the storyline, it was built up to over the past several issues in a methodical cumulative way, and follows everything else that's been shown by logical necessity. This is just the payoff at the end, and it works in its setting.

Not everything in the story works, admittedly. The multi-issue storyline is resolved WAY too quickly; you get the feeling Kupperberg was told "okay, this has dragged on too long, wrap it up this issue." Worse, this moment is the peak, and there's no real dramatic followup. Believe it or not, they were right on the verge of using all these parallel Archies to say something genuinely profound and touching about life and growing old! And then they fumbled the ball before getting it over the goal line. Didn't quite make it.

All I'm saying is, in context, this is a much stronger moment than you'd think.
