The Trinity of Sin Revealed
May. 5th, 2012 06:38 pmOkay so, in the DC New 52 FCBD (Free Comic Book day for the uninitiated) Issue, it was revealed who the Trinity of Sin are.
One was Pandora, the other, as assumed, was the Phantom Stranger, and the third, probably comes to a surprise, ends up to be a person who appears to be The Question aka Vic/Charlie Sage.
(Sorry for the Quality, but i took it with my camera phone….)

What I found interesting was the reveal of the Phantom Stranger’s Identity.
As far as I remember, there have only ever been hints as to who he used to be. But in the FCBD issue, it seems like it is pretty much revealed who he was.

Hmmm Forgive me as HE would… interesting…

You’re greed has darkened the World forever… those are Silver Pieces that the Wizard (i am assuming) is playing with.

The Silver Pieces are what form his necklace, thing.
I think if it is not clear, it is pretty heavily implied that the Phantom Stranger is Judas Iscariot, the man who in Judeo-Christian teachings betrayed Jesus for Thirty Pieces of Silver. The fact that they say his greed “Darkened the world” and the items used to bind him are pieces of silver. As well as the “Forgive me as HE would Line” (since Jesus Preached Forgiveness). Judas was actually one of the implied identities for the Phantom Stranger, and i think this has been one of the biggest “hints” we have ever been given as to his identity. Interesting :D
Now the other Reveal, the Third member of the Trinity of Sin is revealed as I said above, to be the Question.

The Anti-Establishment, the No Face, and the Question Mark Puff of Smoke seem to indicate that this is the newest incarnation of the Question. Im interested to see how this plays out… It’s a different take, and it can be interesting….
The Third member of the Trinity is Pandora, and she is revealed to be…

Yeah as most people suspected, she is THE Pandora. As in Pandora’s Box.
What i find interesting is that the mythical Pandora is a Pre-Judeo-Christian Character, Judas Iscariot is a Judeo-Christian Figure. So, since these two sinners have been pulled from percievably different ages, its possible that the Question pulled her was pulled from a more modern era. Meaning that the Likely hood that he is still Victor Sage seems all the more likely. The Rock of Eternity stands outside of time and space so it is conceivable that these Gods, Ancients, or Wizards have been able to pull the three “greatest” sinners from all of time to the Rock from their respective time Periods. So there You have it. Pandora, Judas Iscariot, and Victor Sage, are the Trinity of Sin. Im actually very interested to see where they will go with this… Color me intrigued DC.

This again...

Re: This again...
Date: 2012-05-06 09:58 am (UTC)Supporting shadowpsykie's thesis that Question is a modern sinner, I've seen a higher-res scan, and he APPEARS to be wearing blue jeans. Which would put him fairly late in world history (1870s or later).
Which might not rule out Cain, but makes you wonder why they waited that long.
But I can't think of a historical or mythical personage who:
1. Rose to power
2. Had a name people feared.
3. Looked like a clean-shaven redhead.
4. In that time period.
5. Would be likely to be caught wearing jeans.
1-4 could be Per Degaton, but I just can't see him in Levi's. :D
Back to the square 1.

Date: 2012-05-06 10:45 am (UTC)Heck the Judas/Cain/Phantom Stranger is wearing a dark blue, open to the chest shirt, a cloak (with no hood) attached to both shoulders of said shirt, trousers and leather boots with turn-downs. I'm pretty sure that wasn't exactly standard wear in 1st century Judea.
Aside from mentioning that this story takes place when man first discovered magic and it's use, Pandora also mentions spending centuries in tears, them more in shame, then even more isolation, so these are not recent events.

Date: 2012-05-06 10:37 am (UTC)It's unclear who the Question character is or what his origins are
If the PS is Judas, it's worth noting I think that the story of Judas goes beyond Christian theology (Since he's purely New Testament, I'm not sure the Judeo- prefix applies), it's become a generic byword for treachery and betrayal.
So one out of three doesn't seem unreasonable, and they picked one of the characters from the Bible who most people would know of.
And we're supposed to be irked by the "You are an evil girl" line, the rest of the story goes a long way to confirm that the judgement WAS unfair, and her crime was only subjectively evil.

Date: 2012-05-06 11:01 pm (UTC)You are into the wikipedia age and you need "explanaitions"?
That "for Christians by Chrisitans" is a foolish straw man to hide your own ignorance.
Or maybe not, but still is a pretty foolish thing to say, because western culture, maybe the 90% of It has Christian references or is influenced by Christian Culture, even (specially) the authors who try to detach from It.
That line was Creepy! Makes you think this are not Judges but bullies. Cause both Stranger and Question looked like they have done something horrible (If Stranger is Judas then that would be Treason) but pandora "just opened a box"
Re: This again...
Date: 2012-05-07 10:59 am (UTC)It's just because of the western's world involvement in the christian mythology that I said that this was written 'by christians for christians'; while the involvement of other mythologies in fictional worlds is made of more or less profound studies which grab and reinvent its themes and characters, when it comes to judeo-christian mythology the same treatement isn't done. Due to the fact that most of the industry is filled with christians and they're too afraid to incur any wrath of the christians in the culture they do not dare to innoviate with those characters and settings in any direction that might make a social reflection or an evaluation of a character other than the most benign.
If you're going to include a mythology in your own story then you have to be prepared to evaluate and explore it freely not constrained by its impressions of itself. In the current western world pretty much all inclusions of christianity will be sanitized for the viewers and will hardly be worthwhile when compared with the deconstruction and reconstruction that might happen around other mythologies.
As such, I have no desire for judeo-christian references in the current state of the comic fiction. They will be unsavory and only feel like propaganda.
Re: This again...
Date: 2012-05-07 03:25 pm (UTC)But is still kinda foolish to feel them like propaganda, and is not fear of opinion what limits the treatment but the knowledge of what you are writing.
You cant inspire anyone wrath if you respect their culture, many times some authors write biblical mithos acording to "common sense", It is truth about everyother culture, people write acording to holliwood or "pop knowledge".
I do feel like you sometimes when I read the new Wonder Woman
PD I doubt that the "Christian Wrath" is real, much like the "angry feminist" the "Wrath of the Christians" is a form of control.
I explain, when some one talks about the "feminist" they create an irreal and unexistent enemy they can point towards, when they talk about the Wrath of the Christians they are just creating a formula like "your dad is going to be mad at you", creating a strong figure you need to follow in order to dont get punished.
Of course you will encounter a hundred angry cristians, but not more, many christian groups lie about their numbers.
Re: This again...
Date: 2012-05-07 03:58 pm (UTC)You're right that DC is most likely going to be too afraid to do something truly subversive like saying Jesus rose from the dead because Vandal Savage dipped him in the Lazarus Pit or something, but turning the hated traitor in Christian mythology into an existing pulp superhero is probably not a Christian's idea of propaganda.
