Unfortunately I don't have anything actually prepared, so instead I thought that I'd post some parts from both Cass' and Steph's series' in memory of the characters that inspired the series.
First off, an early bit of Cass and Steph interaction from Batgirl 21

They arrive at the Babscave, and she tells them what's the buzz and tells them what'sa happenin',

Cass goes into the holodeck training room... then comes out of it again,

And from such tiny seeds friendship is formed...
And from the final issue, number 24, of Steph's series, here are her hallucinations induced by the Black Mercy powder her dad dosed her with. These are apparently the plans for Steph's series if it had been allowed to continue, rather than getting cancelled for Barbara's new one.

Well, I guess with Steph and Cass disappeared into the aether, none of these things will ever come to pass. Kind of... unfortunate that both the Eurasian Batgirl and the potential African American Batgirl have BOTH apparently been erased from continuity though.
Ah, Casstoons began on a note of fandom rage, only right that it be remembered with one.
EDIT: Fixed images, hopefully. *grumble*

Date: 2012-05-09 09:18 pm (UTC)You see the above images? Doesn't all that look awesome? It sure did. Great characters, neat designs, and the right blend of action, drama, humor, and humanity. But now you're stuck on the DCnU, the characters aren't the same (if they're in existence at all), and I haven't bought a book from you guys in over a year. Hope that's been working out for you, because hey, you've been saving me money.
Let me know when things go back to the way they were in a few years, then we'll chat.

Date: 2012-05-09 09:42 pm (UTC)And yes, this is painful to read seeing the potential of Cass and Steph as Batgirl(s) be sacrificed for a not desperately involving Barbara Gordon series.

Date: 2012-05-09 10:13 pm (UTC)Later on in the issue Cass has a mini-nervous breakdown as she goes full force against the semi-intangible villain, the Shadow Thief, but she ends up punching him so hard it stops his heart after Barbara turns off his powers. This was while Cass is fighting him on the Clocktower's roof, so she wasn't able to realise he had turned into a regular bloke until AFTER she'd hit him.
Her basically killing the guy by accident shakes her to the point that she can't revive him, basically because she's having a panic attack, but Steph is able to save the day by giving him basic CPR (implictly she learnt it due to her mum being a nurse, while Cain wasn't really in the business of teaching Cass basic first aid as it wouldn't be useful to her as an assassin). This causes Cass and Steph to have a moment, and is the point where their friendship actually begins properly.

Date: 2012-05-10 07:12 am (UTC)Also, african american Batgirl is the little girl that came to see Steph in the hospital. AND THIS ALSO NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
Of course, DC's editorial policy still seems to be "The readers can't have nice things, INSERT MORE ANGST", so we're not likely to see either of them.

Date: 2012-05-10 07:26 am (UTC)*kiss the fictional Cass and the fictional Steph*
...what?
Anyway, both these former Batgirls, and even those potential futures are just as fictive as the current DCnU. Their legend will live on through the fans!~

Date: 2012-05-10 01:13 pm (UTC)If they wanted to retcon, methinks they should have erased the Killing Joke completely and left space for Babs to go back to Oracle...
ZOMG, BRING THESE CHARACTERS BACK.

Date: 2012-05-14 03:02 am (UTC)Besides no Killing Joke means no Cass, etc. Besides, even if you dont like the story beign told at least is well writen, not like other continuity keys that are just like deux ex machinas (Green Lantern rebirth).
PD: curiously in my country a newspaper sold the Killing Joke the same time The Dark Knight was in theaters, It selled well on the streets and I asure you no woman felt insulted. Everybody got their copy cause the newspaper said It was the comic from where Heath Ledger got his personification of the Joker, etc.
Anyway, they cant erase that, they could have erased Cry For Justice and the Winnick Take on Green Arrow & Black Canary, many Teen Titans deaths, etc. Retconed out many things from War Games and War Crimes, fix the return of Jason to fit the Movie (wich is way better anything Winnick normaly writes), dismiss the "cass is evil" thing (soft booth ot retcon), erase the death of Ryan Choi, get out of canon many Black Night or Final Crisis fillers. Mainly erase every error AFTER 52 and little things like the original WiR and the Big Barda/Superman thing. Identity Crisis would have to stay as you need Ralph in the mistic quest for 52, besides I didnt mind Jack Drake's dead and the style of IC was superb, much more fitting a Noir film than a Superhero Comic, etc.
