According to Newsarama Marvel repeats the earlier experiment this summer after "life-changing events", i.e. apparently the "No more Avengers" utterance.

(I'm betting it's Hope that says it, not Wanda.  That would make more sense.)






At least it doesn't look like another chase, but there's not enough to really tell.

The trouble with this "No more Avengers" bit (amongt, I'm usre, many others) is "No more Mutants" clearly identified a target group who all had something in common. Being a mutant is, literally, in your DNA. If you have the gene, you were included (aside from the irksome handwave of it not affecting most of the X-Men.... X-Force... X-Factor, New Mutants and the like), if you don't have the gene it skipped over you.

It was annoying but there was a simple logic to it.

"No more Avengers" is just... annoyingly vague. Do they mean current Avengers? Anyone who has ever BEEN an Avenger? Anyone who is on a specific Avenger team? And what is intended to happen to those it affects? Death? Exile? Dimensional shunt? Their titles cancelled?

At least them all being cursed with chronic BO which renders them incapable of even standing near each other (and Iron Man can't wear his own armour because, well, you know the old adage about something being as welcome as a fart in a wetsuit..?) would be something different.

As I said earlier, I suspect she (whichever "she" it is) shut down the A-gene, which allows its carriers to gain superpowers under life-threatening stress.

But that still leaves the various magical beings out there, and I include Gods in that category. Strange played a big part in undoing the House of M, so I can't see corrective measures against the magical community not being taken this time.

DC has (well 'had', I dunno how it works in the new DCU) a metagene, but Marvel doesn't really have anything like that. There are mutants and then there are regular humans who are just like us in every conceivable way except that they get powers when exposed to weird things which should really kill them.

I mean very few people in Marvel who are exposed to ridiculous amounts of radiation/cosmic rays/etc actually die from it, to the point that people go out of their way to put themselves through that kind of thing knowing they're likely to get powers out of it. It's not that some of them have a special gene others lack, it's more that the physical laws on Marvel Earth are just tweaked a bit differently...everyone who was ever exposed to cosmic rays (including monkeys) got powers out of it. Everyone who's ever been exposed to gamma rays and didn't die of a bomb blast first got powers out of it. Etc. It's not like some people are just lucky, it seems to be generally the way the physical laws of reality work there...even Hellcat and Moondragon were completely normal women before they were trained into developing various levels of psychic power.....(Hellcat's is vague at best, but it has been brought up on occasion)

Until Marvel actually says the A-gene is no longer meta after 40 years, I'm going to keep working with the premise that it is.

Rick Jones was exposed to gamma radiation and got cancer - not exactly a superpower.

Isn't he one of the Hulks now though? I know people have gotten cancer through exposure to gamma rays in Marvel, I just figured it was a matter of being exposed to the right amount of radiation to empower rather than kill...

It's not like you can have a special gene some days and not others (unless Wanda has a say in it apparently, lol)

A-Bomb, yes. Also he's actually one of the premier examples of Celestial tampering, Destiny Force is one of those things that make cosmics nervous about humanity in general.

But isn't that the same gene/sequence of genes as what gives the X-Men and other Marvel Mutants their powers? The tinkering the Celestials did to humanity's ancestors gives them the potential or superpowers; in some the genes activate with no external catalyst (like most Mutants), but for others (like the F4 and Hulk and Daredevil and Spider-Man and etc.) their genes need a 'boost' to get going.

No, it's two different genes that produce very similar results under different stimuli. Which is quite common in RL genetics.

Theoretically, one could have both genes. I think Franklin Richards does.

That's interesting. I was wondering that myself. What if a child received meta powers before their x-gene activated. Would it mean the x-gene activated earlier or would they get additional powers when the x-gene did activate? Wish Marvel could be clearer about all that like it is now in the Ultimate Universe

I think it will probably be "the Avengers never formed" and the X-men step up to become the world's beloved heroes. Of course, one way the Avengers may not have formed would be no powers except for mutants (fixed DNA, which makes more sense biologically anyway). But I think it will be more of an event leading to no Avengers team.

Aside from the Phoenix having no abilities to do with temporal manipulation that I recall (Rachel sort of had that power because it was her own mutation distinct from what she got from her parents but that was limited), that does strike me as being masterfully self-defeating for Marvel, who should have been planning on capitalising on the Avengers movie right about now.

In fairness, what I saw of that movie would certainly make me want to bury the title, pretend I'd never published it and salt the earth, just in case.

And was I the only one thinking, "Screw this crap--Sam Elliott's Carter Slade seems a helluva lot more interesting; how about a Weird Western film starring him as the Ghost Rider?"
