She's big, he's little it's...

With cover by Amanda Conner

From DC's website

Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Cat Staggs and Rich Perotta, PHANTOM LADY will star the female Freedom Fighter in the debut of her own 4-part miniseries. And joining her will be her partner-in-crimefighting, the diminutive dynamo known as Doll Man.

“Phantom Lady and Doll Man is an exciting return to the roots of the characters as pulpy, street level crime fighters with a few new twists and some heavy sci-fi overtones,” Justin Gray told THE SOURCE. “We took the best of their original core concepts and updated them with no relation to our previous work on Phantom Lady and Doll Man in the Freedom Fighters. You're getting in on the ground floor of the origin story of two people whose lives intersect and a common threat that transforms them into pretty amazing and engaging superheroes.”

“We are super excited to reconnect with characters we have been so close with over the years, and getting to create something both exciting and visually cool in the process,” continued Jimmy Palmiotti. “With this series, we dig into who Phantom Lady and Doll Man are, how they came to be and how they fit into DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. There is something for everyone here and we are having a blast!”

“I have to say I am really enjoying what Jimmy and Justin have created,” said Cat Staggs. “It is a wonderful take on a classic character. The story itself leans towards a gritty crime noir, which is something I am a huge fan of. Getting to draw this on a daily basis is a dream! I can’t wait for fans to see it!”

Have to say, this does sound like it could be fun.

Oh, and if you're not familiar with Cat Staggs, may I suggest here and here for samples of her work

Interesting costume for Phantom Lady, quite a change from her traditional wear.

Can't say I've heard of Cat Staggs, what else have they worked on?

Have you seen the Smallville season 10 covers? That's her most recent work, I believe.

Happy to see Staggs on a book! I'm disappointed that I will be missing Long Beach Comics Expo tomorrow. She was going to finish a Barda commission for me. :/

While I normally avoid all things Smallville, I did catch the covers. They looked pretty good.

Not that there isn't cheesecake tease in this redesign, but Phantom Lady was renowned for having her prodigious "assets" before even Power Girl.

I liked Stormy's costume from the previous Uncle Sam series. The solid-form visor was sweet.

I like the coverage but couldn't they have done something a bit more of a derivative costume?

I look at her and wouldn't say 'Phantom Lady' at least not yet..... Her costume was pretty iconic even its skimpiness, the green and yellow and black. Most iconic comic book suits have very simple colors. Throw a yellow trenchcoat on a pink top and BAM Jubilee.

Couldn't they have kept the Stormy Knight costume but basically filled in the cut-out panels that were originally...not there, thus creating a full covered bodysuit?

I'm all for bodysuits and that looks like an awesome hood on her suit (right) but as far as costume design goes this seems a bit over-designed to me, like it's gonna be hard to draw for people, too involved and not very memorable. A lot of the new 52 costumes have been like that, over-designed and overcomplicated. I thanked the design gods when they got rid of that obnoxious purple lining to Batgirl's cape.

Wonder Woman's though is good.

Well, I for one like the new costume. (At least as drawn by Conner. From the bits of Staggs' art you link to, I trust her to make it look good, too, though.)

But I mostly came in here because you mention Jimmy, but not Justin, and I was amazed at the thought of either of them writing without the other. *laughs*

I'm getting a Hank Pym/Janet Van Dyne vibe here, if you remember a certain scene and this is s_d, after all.

Yeah, I wasn't gunna be the first to say it, but you're definitely not the only one who went there. >_>

(I'm a-hopin' and a-prayin' that Jimmy and Justin go there... Or, I suppose, that Doll Man goes there, rather.)

(...BOY, I hope we're talking about the same scene.)

I am so disappointed. The ultra revealing costume was half the fun of the character.

I am, of course, talking about Dollman.

THey COULD have made up for it by giving Doll Man something close to HIS original costume, which was pretty equal opportunity beefcake.

Though I'd wish we get Conner on the pages themselves... (still not book for her in this whole New 52?? for shame!!)
