Hm, considering they made a mysterious out of who the new Wingman was in the pre-reboot issue of Batman Inc., I am curious about who this guy actually is. I was going to say Jason Todd, though DC seem to have made that idea nonviable on their own.

PRINCE OF CATS TP

Written by RONALD WIMBERLY
Art and cover by RONALD WIMBERLY
On sale SEPTEMBER 5 • 144 pg, FC, $16.99 US • MATURE READERS
This hip-hop retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet focuses on Tybalt (derisively referred to as “the Prince of Cats”) and his Capulet crew as they do battle nightly with the hated Montagues. Set in a Blade Runner-esque version of Brooklyn, PRINCE OF CATS is a mix of urban drama, samurai action and classic Shakespearean theater...all written in iambic pentameter!
Don’t miss this original graphic novel written and illustrated by Ronald Wimberly (SENTENCES: THE LIFE OF M.F. GRIMM)!

Sounds interesting.

"Wingman" is the leader of the duo?

I do love comics about models doing heroics, but the cover to Looker puts me off (that plus the backstory explained by cleome upthread). Also, I don't get her leggings.

I wish I could write us a Reverse-Looker.

"Hello, gorgeous and highly successful pro supermodel. We will give you phenomenal powers that will save the world!!... IF you will consent to appear to all who see you as just an average-looking adult woman!"

Do you think she'd agree to it? And do you think Editorial would let her continue to be heroic and likable and stuff?

Wasn't that the concept of one of the Great Lakes Avengers/Champions/Defenders/X-men?

Big Bertha? Depends what you mean by "average", I guess.

For a minute I read that as Big Barda and was thoroughly confused.

:o

Interesting, but I was honestly thinking more of a female character who wasn't changed into a form that read to others as "monstrous." More like one who just looked average. (So, overweight? Sure, most women are heavier than supermodels, but not shaped like Big Bertha IRL.) As opposed to the beauty queens we're frequently told are meant to represent our "average" selves.

Not that "monster" stories are all bad, but I think they're somewhat different in character.

I thought the cover to Looker was interesting in that it seems to be deliberately raising the question of where the "gaze" in the picture is supposed to be found. At first it seems to be on the woman's body because she's in the foreground, but then you immediately notice that the *man's* image is centred in the frame, seen through the camera-phone's viewfinder--which is also where Looker is looking (while we look at Looker in the act of looking). It then drew my eyes to the man behind her, who surprisingly seems to be even more sexualised than she is.

So I think it's sort of striking as an image, but I can quite see how the sleaziness is off-putting. It does suggest that the back-story is likely to make me annoyed and queasy.

That's a cool reading of the image actually! I don't think that chap is anywhere neeeeeear as sexualised (maybe if you weigh up averages?) and I am mean and jaded enough to assume that the artist was going for "poor camgirl can't even sell her image any more (haha women)"

BUT

Your way is definitely more interesting, and I shall re-file the picture in my memory!

At first I thought the dude was more sexualised because he's all sprawled out and his jeans are unzipped, but then I noticed Looker's leggings/terrifying gusset display, so maybe you are right.

Most likely gender politics have nothing to do with the "contested gaze" in this picture, and it's all a visual pun based on the fact that she's called Looker, but what the hey!
