i will give this to morrison, there hasn'tbeen an issue i didn't like, and there has never been an issue that didn't leave me with more questions than what i started with.... and was not bothered by it...

GREAT issue, but I will admit the costume changes is kind-of throwing me. The only thing I can think of right now is that Clark will wear the suit when he's doing stuff with the Justice League, but at this early period he still kind-of prefers the T-shirt and jeans.

Lines like "Nobody wants two adorable hamsters, and no one wants to start tackling poverty in Somalia" take me right out of this, I appreciate it's supposed to be an incongruous juxtaposition, but it just doesn't work for me.

Clearly, we feed the hamsters to the Somalians.

Morrison's dialogue does rub me the wrong way, sometimes. Like.. The very notion of Batman calling someone a 'snoop' is just bizarre, to me, amongst other things. I appreciate Batman's meant to be younger here, but.. Why? Morrison's been writing the guy for over five years, and not once has his Batman seemed like the sort to call someone a 'snoop'.

I think it was kind of a dig at him, since Clark called him a "playboy".

And those are the kinda lines I love from Morrison, so...yeah, different strokes, I guess.

Oh indeed, it's just the notion of Superman seeing these two notions as morally comparable that strikes me as off.

Luthor I can see doing that because ultimately he doesn't care about either, but Superman whilst sympathising with the hamsters, would never dream of comparing it with a genuine human tragedy involving people dying.

I didn't interpret that as him directly comparing the two, but more things that are bothering him. He wants to help in simple ways like keeping these animals safe who's only crime was having a horrible human for a master, and he wants to help people all over the world who are suffering from hunger and/or tyranny.

Of course they are not! Can't have these characters looking old in this youth obsessed culture of ours.

I assume Morrison is going somewhere with this, but having the JLA sit around and muse about how ultimately useless they are is maybe not the best way to introduce your universe's premiere super-team.

Heh, leave it to Morrison to remember Lois' niece Susie and professional Superman impersonator Gregory Reed (and I believe "A House Above the World" was Alan Moore's poetic description of the JLA satellite when they cameo'd in Swamp Thing).

Indeed it was

There is a house above the world, where the over-people gather.
There is a man with wings like a bird.
There is a man who can see across the planet and wring diamonds from its anthracite.
There is a man who moves so fast that his life is an endless gallery of statues.
In the house above the world, the over-people gather...

Didn't Batman reveal his identity to Green Lantern in the first JLA arc?

Yep. But you didn't actually expect Grant Morrison to follow another author's continuity, did you?

On the whole I don't care for this, but I really like that Diana's taller than Superman here.

Wow, it's been a really long time since I've read anything with these characters in it if these scenes manage to give me ~feelings. (Okay, most of them about Bruce, and that's not exactly a feat to get me to have feelings about that guy.)

I like the way Diana's drawn, and her one line is pretty IC.

Also agreed on how the art makes everyone look like they're barely in their twenties on the second one.

Batman "crouching" like that looks more like a pouting child sitting on the stairs listening to mommy and daddy fight.
