I REALLY hope this is good - "War of the Robins" preview

The preview doesn't show anything of the setup for Damian apparently deciding that the only way to prove he's the bestest ever Robin is... to beat the crap out of all past holders of the title (And sorry folks, no Steph, which I don't think comes as a surprise to us). Even Tomasi, whose work on Nightwing I loved, hasn't been able to sell me on the Bruce/Damian dynamic (nor has Morrison). Tim and Damian being at odds is to be expected, and Damian and Jason aren't likely to get on following their past meeting against the Flamingo, but I'm not sure I want to see the first extended Dick/Damian scenes not counting the other brief scenes of them (guest starring in Batwing etc) to be them at each others throats. Dick should be special to Damian as the first person who accepted him as he was and didn't try forcing him to change, but has done more to change him than anyone else has managed.

The preview showcases a new villain, who has gathered together a group of bad guys who have all suffered at the hands of Batman whilst in the course of their criminal activities.



So we have what appears to be three people fused into one by some sort of chemical accident. A guy with a batarang stuck through his head (after he picked one up and attempted to throw it back at Batman and forgot what boomerangs actually DO when they miss). Some sort of flamethrower wielding badguy who ended up with a Bat-boot to the face, and a lady who gives new meaning to the term body-piercing

We'll see how it goes I suppose...

Is it bad that I laughed at the panel of the guy hitting himself with a Batarang?

Also: The others have to make fun of him. The others can say that they were actually stopped by Batman. He's got a Batarang stuck in his head because he's an idiot.

The guy who's hair is messed up because Batman gave him a noogie.

The guy who has a crooked nose because while he was distracted by Batman (who was passing by on some unrelated adventure), he walked face first into a telephone pole.

Okay so the latest crop of villains are from the stage of Dr. Phil? Meh. Douglas Adams did it better with Agrajag and Arthur Dent.

Oh lord. I swear every time Damian takes a step forward it's like five steps back. And actually I think Tomasi has done more with the Bruce/Damian dynamic than anyone, because I was really dreading them going through the "Damian is evil!!1!" storyline but IMO he's done a good job of making it actually something believable on both sides.

I would agree with you, except it feels like Tomasi waffles with them so often-- and it really shows if you read his B&R issues back to back. Bruce and Damian's interactions have been so inconsistent.

The whole "Damian is EVIL" thing should have been written off IMMEDIATELY. Streets of Gotham and Morrison's B&R settled that quite nicely. Tomasi is writing Damian backwards.

Given the comedic idiocy of the first guy, I'm guessing we're not supposed to feel sorry for these morons. Yeah they were permanently scarred by Batman -- while they were all committing serious crimes that Batman foiled. And they think they're the victims? World's Smallest Violin, people.

And honestly, this angle has already been done. Didn't Batman play a role in "creating" the Joker and Two-Face?

It actually looks like a cheapening of the way batman sometimes ends up creating his own villains. Batarang-to-the-head is a classic corny idea, really.

A 'War of the Robins' would actually be worth it if Helena was one of the former Robins he was taking on. Given Damian's own obsession with being blood-related to Bruce, she would be the only other biological Wayne who could make a run for his money. And she's residing on the Main DCU Earth right now.

I like how the artist can't even be bothered to keep the woman's Bat Piercing the same orientation in the flashback. Or was that a result of trying to get it removed by a cheap, back-alley "doctor?"
