After that unfortunate business in Legends of the Dark Knight, I thought we needed some scans of Alfred being awesome.

From Detective Comics #486, 1979 (Select panels from a 7-page story)

This takes place during the period when Bruce Wayne moved out of Wayne Manor and into a penthouse apartment on top of the Wayne Foundation building. Alfred is coming back from a shopping trip when he gets waylaid in the elevator by some thugs:

Alfred isn't especially concerned for his own safety...there's a more urgent problem:

While he tries to think of a way to get rid of these mooks, he also does some evidence-gathering by offering them coffee:

To keep them from doing too much poking around, Alfred opens the wall safe for them. Unfortunately, it mostly contains stocks and bonds, worthless without Bruce's signature:

He even offers them his stamp collection, which he implies is worth far more than it actually is. But still they're determined to wait for Wayne. Finally, Alfred "casually" mentions that Mr. Wayne is probably hanging out with his pal Police Commissioner Gordon. THAT gets a reaction:

Writer Bob Rozakis was the go-to guy for these short filler stories. Pure fluff, but charming and fun, and a chance for the supporting cast to shine.

Pretty much what it says here -- they knocked out (or killed?) the guards in the lobby, then jumped Alfred as he was stepping into the private elevator. Seems like a risky plan just to boost some cash...then again, you'd think someone as paranoid as Batman would have better security measures in the first place...

I could totally see Bruce having booby-trapped the batcave to the point where it coulds top Galactus, but not bother to lock the door to the mansion.

I know Galactus is Marvel, but I could see Bruce securing the Batcave against external company incursion.

Well again, this was at a period when Bruce wasn't working out of the mansion, but out of the Wayne Enterprises building. So I suspect his ability to secure the building was far more restricted than normal.
