J. Jonah Jameson does not know fear

Inspired by this post, more Jonah being a badass.

After seeing his friend Matt Murdock's life ruined by the Kingpin, Ben Urich sets out to break the story for the Daily Bugle. Kingpin's not keen on the idea, and hires someone to shut him up. Ben gets his hand broken, but poor Nick Manolis, the cop who was Urich's informant, he gets it a lot worse while Urich watches helplessly.
Ben Urich has caught a case of The Fear. It's time for a chat with the boss.


Jameson is a pillar. He is hard, he is disappointed, but he does not fire him. He knows Urich is a good reporter and that he's rattled, he just needs time to make this story happen, and a reminder of why it's so important.
Urich eventually gets better, but only after it gets worse. There's so much more to his story than this (maybe i'll have to do a post sometime of Born Again, though scanning from the trade i a pain), but that's for another post.

I love that artwork - gorgeous use of monochrome style in the office scene.

Between this and Batman Year One, the coloring in BYO might be better, but the art is so clean. It's almost sterile compared to the often expressionistic energy of Born Again.

But either way Mazzuchelli is a master.

Ahhhh, yes. Born Again was the absolute peak of Miller's writing, before he became a caricature of himself. Mazzuchelli's art sang, every panel. I loved every subplot set up in this, every little thing.

And then they threw all of it, all of it away.

It's interesting how Jonah's character has morphed over the years. When he was first introduced, he was a total sleaze, an opportunist and yellow journalist of the worst sort. But in the post-Stan Lee era, it became more and more common to see Jonah portrayed as a good, dedicated newspaperman, who just happened to have this weird hang-up about Spider-Man. The latter is more nuanced, certainly, and that "Born Again" scene is dynamite. But I kind of like "irredeemable jackass" Jonah too.

My take has always been that he IS a genuine jackas... but he is also principled. Completely loathsome on personal matters, but in some ways a real idealist. He'll treat people like scum but he'll take a stand for principles.

Even Stan's Jonah had his human moments! I don't remember if it was in the Ditko or the Romita days, but there was an issue where Jonah admitted in soliloquy that he gave Spidey so much trouble out of jealousy.
