X-Men love their family stuff
Jun. 22nd, 2012 09:02 pmWhen I joined Scans Daily, I had an entire plan to post this on Father's Day as my first post. And then I forgot. But better late then never so image heavy-ish post ahead.
This one was from Uncanny XMen #340. Iceman was undercover, keeping an eye out on Graydon Creed - the son of Sabertooth and Mystique. When Creed found out his parentage he became very anti-mutant. Now Iceman's dad previously did not approve of mutants. But because of what Iceman was, he ended up standing up for them in a public news cast. Then things fell apart.

And here is a hint at the opposite in Ultimate X-Men #13. The first appearance of Gambit. Here he is a street performer and while he is putting on one of his shows, a girl see him use his powers and believes it's magic. When he finds out the reason she is chasing after him is because she wants him to bring her mother back to life he ends up taking her in until he can get her to her next of kin.

The little girl ends up trying and sticking her hand out to try and catch the passing train. Gambit sees, yanks her away and starts yelling at her.

The phone number is from a girl he flirted with in the beginning.

Crappy dad, but Gambit tries to be different. When he wakes up, the girl is missing. Hammerhead had kidnapped the girl and Gambit heads off to get her back.
--- Ultimate X-Men #13 was a 24 page issue. Since I'm new, I tried to look over all the rules over how to post but if I for some reason missed something or did something wrong please tell me and I will fix it. I also tried to make sure no one had posted these before but if they were already posted, then I'm sorry for the double post.

Date: 2012-06-23 03:10 am (UTC)Ah, the Maximoff Family. Is there anyone you aren't related to?
Also, are they trying to do an accent with Bobby's dad? If so, what accent are they attempting? I'm a little confused.
Always enjoyed that little Gambit story.
Congrats on your first post!

Date: 2012-06-23 04:02 am (UTC)Bobby was born and raised in New York, but that doesn't really mean that would be the dad's accent but I always imagined the dad had some sort of New England accent at least. Then again, all the scenes with Bobby talking - in this issue at least - do not have him with any written accent that I can tell. So his dad dropping the sounds may have just been because he was injured. But who really knows.

Date: 2012-06-23 05:31 am (UTC)You can tell that's a Chuck Austen story by the occasional beats here and there, and the way he mangles Gambit's accent, but it's far and away the best thing he ever produced for either of the big two comic publishers. There's no comparison. It's like he wrote that during the one month he was on his meds or something.

Date: 2012-06-23 04:41 pm (UTC)First he was frosty (pun intended) to Opal (Bobby's Japanese girlfriend) and a bunch of cybernetic samurai attacked them. Then he was rude towards Rogue (thinking she was Bobby's new girlfriend). I may have to read the issues again to see if William didn't like Bobby being a mutant or something else.
Given the whole "William Drake stands up to Graydon Creed" bit, maybe it wasn't "William disapproves of Bobby being a mutant" as much as "William disapproves of Bobby fighting Charles Xavier's war which can never be won."
