Batman: Earth One Preview

CBR has a preview posted for Batman: Earth One on their website, and I have to say...

I love that bit, because Knox is just being a dick and mocking Bruce's collection, and Bruce completely shows him up by going 'I actually AM Bruce Wayne, jackass'.

But.. Yeah. I'm getting a really kind of '89 vibe from the samurai armour, and a Begins vibe from the dialogue, which is about as on-the-nose as some of Nolan's.

I thought that it was amusing that rather than going with the David Nivenish design of comicbook Alfred, they seem to have gone with a design vaguely resembling Michael Caine's real life friend Sean Connery instead.

Reading his dialogue in his accent... either spoils it or makes it better, I'm not sure.

I think Connery certainly matches up to the 'tough old bastard' look they're seemingly trying to give Alfred here, based on the now well-known design sketches. So.. Yeah. I can see it, and I think it works, even with the famoush Connery acshent.

For a couple of reporters, I'm surprised Knox and Vale both don't know what Bruce Wayne looks like.

Vicki's new in town after she comes back from.. I think it's Corto Maltese?, so she at least has something of an excuse, and Knox seems to spend more time trolling the likes of Eckhart - at least in terms of what we see him doing on film - for information about The Batman. I think there's also the idea that Bruce Wayne is meant to be really rather reclusive, but given we see him chatting with a few other people at one of his fundraisers, and Batman Returns actively has him taking an interest in Shreck's plans to the degree it seems Bruce actively has an influence in Gotham.. Yeah. Vale has the best excuse.

The Alfred living in my head had alternate diologue.

"I do wish you would reconsider the bat motif, Sir. (Or even dressing up in a costume outside October.)"

"Fear of bats is far from universal, Master Bruce, something your personal experience at the mausoleum may lead you to overlook. I worry because the people you intend to hunt do not easily scare."

"Everyone gets scared, Alfred."

"Very well, but please remember there are two sides to everything."

Alfred looks like he should be played by either Christopher Lee or R. Lee Ermey if this book gets a movie adaptation. Either would be awesome.

I thought Sean Connery, but Christopher Lee Alfred would be awesome. Especially as he actually is an incredibly prolific actor who is an expert swordsman, was a spy during WW2 and a talented singer (as well as a being a huge fan of Pratchett, Tolkein and heavy metal music).

I dunno for you, but this looks like a mix of Begins and Batman '89 to me :P
Anyway, doesn't look half as bad as I feared...
