Sigh... it would have been nice to have had at least one hero who was settled down and engaged or married, and Alan seemed like an ideal candidate. This is... depressing.

Agreed on all accounts. But of course, this being James Robinson writing and his well known love of fridging and relationship-phobia, I honestly can't be bothered to be surprised anymore.

Disappointing, sure, but I'm still curious enough to see where Alan goes with this.

Also--does anyone else get a bit of a Noah/burning bush vibe from this scene? I'm kinda surprised that when Alan asked what it is, it didn't reply "I am, that I am."

Just for statistical purposes, how many panels did Alan Scott's boyfriend actually appear in from both issues of this before they killed him off?

More than the most recent Grasshopper over in Marvel, but then, that's a running gag with the character (each new Grasshopper gets less panel time before dying; I figure that by Grasshopper V or VI, we'll never actually see him, we'll just see him getting buried.)

And besides, given that they just wiped out ALL of the stable, established relationships because they "age" the characters, why would they then go and create one? *eye roll*

while i am not happy about this... (that is a VERY big understatment...) a part of me still feels like they might go the "Obsidian/Harlequin" route with Sam. him wearing black and Alan talking about him "skulking in the shadows" seems too on the nose for me...

im still pissed... very pissed.... but maybe i am being naive... or a doormat... but there still might be some good here...

The boyfriend dying does suck. However, the thing that I find surprising is that he isn't just symbolically going to try to replace Superman but that he's flat out told from the start that's his purpose. He's not supposed to go out and do the best he can. He has to go out and be the next Superman level hero. There's a lot of great story potential in that kind of pressure and expectation.

...and if in six months Wildcat is seducing him into bed with a black unitard I wouldn't complain about that either...

Bah. Marriage would've just aged the character. We need a young, hip Alan Scott that all the young kids can relate to, so we need him out there on the swinging dating scene! After all, everyone knows that comic book buyers are single, without girlfriends.

But is anyone really surprised? Weren't we calling it from the moment the BF appeared? Doesn't anyone remember how Robinson disposed of the Blue Starman's boyfriend (who he created just he created Sam) to instil the motivation for Mikaal to want "justice" and join the JLA? This is basically the same scenario.

Dispose of a loved one to create drama/instil motivation. Lazy writing 101 and as old as the hills. Robinson has done it before and often - to actual good effect in Starman (David's death which kicked off the series and resonated throughout the series) and to awful effect since he's come "back" to writing full time - hence the killing of Lian Harper for effect to motivate her father and Ollie, the killing of Zor-El in the New Krypton storyline to motivate Supergirl, the killing of Firebird to motivate Chris/Nightwing, the killing of all of New Krypton to motivate Zod, the killing of Congorilla's family that got him to join Cry for Justice and on and on. Robinson does it all the time.

Blah. The minute I saw the first bit of text of the post I knew what had happened, it's depressing that with the slightest hint I expected pretty much the only male gay character's boyfriend to be dead. I do hope DC weren't expecting it to be a big surprise.
