Welp, now I know what I'm going to replace Detective with. Does a great job at creating an intriguing mystery (I mean, we know that it's the Scarecrow, but what exactly is he doing to these kids? For what purpose?) and some good character drama for both Bruce and Gordon.

Also, I think this book has a first where Gordon pulls a Batman on Batman. :O

Don't like Bruce, after essentially raising 4 kids, totally ignoring Damian. At least fake it, man, you never make a kid trying to have a REALTALK feel like he's being ignored.

I can just hear Damian's unspoken "Grayson ALWAYS listened when HE was Batman."

I like Batman doing his best to not scare the child, letting her know he was going to move slightly closer to her, and praising her for being brave. THAT'S good Batman right there.

Dang it....good Bruce giveth and bad Bruce taketh away.

The first two pages are heart-breakingly good. They're EXACTLY how Batman should be...a former victim who's trying to help. He knows he's scary...he's MEANT to be scary...but he's trying NOT to scare the girl. The artwork really sells it, with his body language.

Then Damian reaching out and....ARGH. And you're right about Dick and Damian. I really rather wish they'd survived as a team, here.

what sucks is in the other books (or at least Batman and Robin) Bruce is AT LEAST trying. and is putting some real effort into it. ugh....

but yeah those first few pages. those were my batman... the one that tries to comfort the victim, especially if he is a child

I absolutely agree about all the Bruce pages: good character stuff, lovely pace, even though the interaction with Damian is a bit wince-worthy. I want to give him a little shake and say "pay attention!"

I did want to mention, though... is it me, or has vision-Babs been shot through the pelvic region? Which first: ouch. Second: is it easier, if still horrible, to recover from a shattered pelvis (happens in car accidents) than a shattered spine? I mean, I'm assuming it's just an art error caused by her extra-long comic-woman proportions, but it struck me as odd.

Would a person end up in a wheelchair from a shattered pelvis? It seems like a lot of pressure from the upper body would still be resting on the pelvis in a wheelchair, but I'm not a medical professional.

Augh Bruce! Why must you be so caring to child victims and not recognize when you need to be caring to the child who needs you most!

If she does need to use a wheelchair, she'd probably have to have a special form-fitted orthopedic seat cushion.

But It's amazing how much restoration can be done to an injured pelvis. I wouldn't expect it to render her incapable of walking.

Then again, there could be a leakage of septic fluids into the abdomen...and then anything could happen. Spinal sepsis, peritonitis with abdominal wall necrosis, I'd expect her to use an ostomy bag for the rest of her life.

Being gut-shot is a horrible thing.

That's some pretty great Bruce characterization. I think he's allowed to be lost in thoughts once in a while--not necessarily neglectful of Damian, but like always, the work tends to come first for him.

But Damian's dialogue is a little off. I'm used to him being written as implausibly verbose and articulate, and Hurwitz seems to be injecting a bit of kiddie cadence in him. Strikes me as a bit OOC.

I flipped through this issue at the store and while some of the stuff like Crane partially sewing up his mouth (and still being able to talk clearly. WTF?) made me roll my eyes, I did really enjoy the pages with Batman and the little girl. I always like seeing Bat's softer side.
