"Sour grapes" is you saying your goal isn't worth it after you've tried to attain it. It's not "whining about not winning".

The meaning has shifted, as words tend to do, sour grapes does more commonly mean "losing gracelessly".

According to Wikipedia, the "sour grapes" may have been improperly translated, and the fox really meant "unripe grapes."

Study of older versions of the fable suggest that "unripe" might be a more literal translation, the idea being that the fox would come back later to try in earnest. The word "unripe" may have been replaced with "sour" by the fable's Victorian translators since the word "unripe", in Victorian society, might have been interpreted as an innuendo suggesting an as-yet unripe woman.

I think it depends on time and place.

If you work in a very sexist place where the men in charge actively oppose female workers, acting like a ditz could convince them that you aren't a "threat", and they might leave you alone to do your job in peace.
