Well, I do mean sort of, this is a line that in Japan was launched as part of the Transformers franchise back in the 1980's, when they were released in the rest of the world there was no Transformers connection, and it looks like the comic is going down that road too.
Back before Pokémon made it cool for humans to make little animals fight for no sensible reason, some animals were doing it for themselves. Can you guess what toy line I mean, or are you all too young?
Final clue...
Back in the 1980's a new, and fairly short lived, toy line appeared on the toy shelves
Meet The Battle Beasts
They had no cartoon (Almost amazing in and of itself, since Hasbro marketed them), but in Japan, they were the BeastFormers, who debuted in the Headmasters Transformers cartoon as inhabitants of the planet Animatros. They didn't stick around long, but they were there.
But TF link or not, they had the same gimmick - They were basically tribes of anthropomorphic beasts, any of whom might belong to any one of three tribes; Water, Fire and Wood and until the heat sensitive symbol on each toy was rubbed, you wouldn't know which one you'd bought, and the Tribes HATED each other...
In traditional childhood game rules there was en Escher like hierarchy of superiority; Water douses Fire, Fire burns wood, and Wood floats on Water (A planned expansion to include two new tribes - Lizard and Spock, never happened ;) ).
IDW, who currently have the Transformers licence are taking advantage of the fact to release their own Battle Beasts series,
Here's the solicit -
It's just another average day for Bliss, an ignored linguist at the Department of Defense (Sigh, like I always say, DON'T ignore your linguists). However, when Bliss unlocks the secret translation of an ancient scroll, terror rains from the sky... in the form of the BATTLE BEASTS! Relentless creatures who know only a life of combat, they've brought their unquenchable thirst for battle with them! The only thing that can stop them is a gentle word from the one woman who can understand them—Bliss!!
It does look like fun... sort of an anthropomorphic animal Warriors Three (I think) on a world where war is the norm...
