Well, Kaare drew Emma here a LOT better than when he did in Xenogenesis. I also loved how she taunted Thor--that was just signature her. :D

One of the few fights I've actually enjoyed in this terrible series.

Emma + her taunting = beaten Thor

That ass shot though....it reminded me far too much of the Japanese bara censor bars that really don't hide ANYTHING. It's like someone was drawing an ass, thought "let's keep it PG," then drew a line to cover the rectum.

This is actually pretty great. I have no idea why Emma is fighting Thor (did the Avengers invade Utopia again?) but her trash talk is kinda awesome.

That ass shot of hers on the third page is ridiculous though.

Aside from that this whole fight was badass. Pure. Badass. Emma's dialogue, her beating, her epic diamond rain attack... All of it awesome.

Yeah, when I saw this fight I thought back to when Emma was shot with a diamond bullet by one of the Cuckoos and shattered. I figured this would be a repeat of that.

Cause you know, sans Phoenix force there is no way this fight lats more than a minute. Depending on how chivalrous Thor is and reluctant he is to beat a woman within an inch of her life with a hammer. I mean Thor is a nice guy and even considering who she is and what she can do he might have some reservations.

It's also important to remember that Thor has the same problem as Superman -- he instinctively holds back his strength to avoid causing too much collateral damage. Thor only really cuts loose against horrifically powerful monsters that don't look remotely human like Jormungandr (a snake the size of a freaking planet), the Void (a horrible tentacled centipede thing that had just killed his brother), and the Norse god of fear Cul Borson (who had just turned into a huge dragon). Things might have turned out differently if Emma looked a little less human.

It also probably doesn't help that the Phoenix Five's agenda isn't wholly evil. They really do seem to be trying to make the world a better place. They aren't like some of Thor's other foes who are irredeemably evil menaces to all creation. It's hard to go all out against an opponent when part of you can't help but agree with their goals.

Also, I think Emma could possibly win without Phoenix. She is a world class telepath. She could just turn his higher brain functions off. I mean, we haven't seen how well a telepath could affect an Asgardian brain.

But that's sort of the point, Emma is all about self control (over her mind, her body and her sexuality) and is good enough at snark to know JUST how to get under someone's skin. She's provoking him, belittling him, making him lose control, you're not necessarily supposed to like or admire her for it.

Thor said some really funny things in this fight.

Poor guy got the Worf treatment pretty hard. It makes you wonder how the the hell the other Avengers are going to stand a chance when Emma Frost, Phoenix Force or not, beats fucking Thor at his near-strongest with little difficulty.

Really, the only reason Thor lost this fight is because the plot (such as it is) needed him to lose. There's no way they could drag it out for this long otherwise.

At least Thor still comes across as the more heroic combatant. Emma was never a very pleasant person, even as a good guy, and the Phoenix's power is taking her worst traits up to eleven.

You think so? I feel they've nerfed most of them. Asides from Phoenixes, most X-Men have lost their Versus fight, or got a draw. Most Avengers victories have been more overwhelming compared to X-Men victories.

And what's with the WINNER-tag? When did this turn into a video game?!?
The Versus miniseries has had them from the beginning.

I realize that 'Worf' and 'Thor' both have four letters, but honestly, why is it always 'throw Thor under a bus' time whenever these things have to occur to show how tough a character is.

Honestly, I hope there's some intimation at some point that the Phoenix force is corrupting folks...otherwise it seems like they've turned the X-Men into full-blown supervillains. That the Avengers are being written as world-class jerks doesn't make it any more forgivable, IMHO. Honestly, when Kang or the Master of the World or Doctor Doom talk about taking over the world and granting the peace of Tyranny, it doesn't sound any different than what the PhoeniX-Men are spouting here.

Of course, this is the Marvel Universe, where apparently every nation in the world has been working on a Sentinel program instead of nuclear technology...to deal with the 200+ mutants in the world. And half the nations in the world have access to some derivation of the Super Soldier formula, which never works...except for when it does, plot-wise.

For all the problems with Fear Itself, at least that was one crossover that didn't rely on any of the heroes acting more like villains or morons. It also had the general populace be something other than a bunch of idiots trying their best to stupid themselves to death.

She's survived being shattered before. It did take a powerful psychic to rebuild her though.

And honestly, since the Phoenix Five did use the power of a planet-eating firebird to take over the world, a kill order wouldn't be a terribly inappropriate response.

I got to admit, I don't like Emma when she's in villain mode. I was introduced to the character when she was in her teaching phase in New X-men, and that kind of stuck with me. I like Emma the slightly evil but still devoted teacher dedicated to her students. I don't like Emma the bog standard evil vampy villainess.

I'm not sure who they're hyping up here: Emma or the Phoenix. I guess the idea is that even a god is no match for a cosmic force like the Phoenix. Or 1/5 of one at any rate. Though maybe that's because the Phoenix consumed so many worlds and stars on its way to Earth.

Too bad Thor didn't have the Odinforce this time.

The more I read about this event, the less I like it. I mean, the entire X-Men series has been terrible post-Messiah Complex in my opinion, but this makes me want to disavow X-Men entirely. The OOC-ness on both sides is just headache inducing.
