Journey Into Mystery #641
Jul. 20th, 2012 09:55 amThis issue is the resolution of the Mancehster Gods arc, the last arc before the "Everything Burns" crossover. It was hard to pick only four pages because the whole issue was great.
The previews already show what course of action Loki decided to take (to help the Manchester Gods and destroy the Old Regime). Following that, a peace treaty is signed which essentially gives the Manchester Gods power over Otherworld. There's a nice moment with Captain Britain (who doesn't know of Loki's and Leah's involvement in Otherworld's fall) and another with Daimon. Loki must then settle his debt with Hela, and manages to get her a sip from the Holy Grail. Which leads to this:

Loki asks Ikol if what Hela said is true

Loki then returns to Asgardia to report the events in Otherworld to the All-Mother. They are not pleased.

Thor, go give Loki a hug, please.
On a side note, Leah did get in a decent pun before she left. I'm a bit confused, though. Why is Leah's existence tied to Hela's hand? And is Leah related to/some type of clone of Hela?

Date: 2012-07-21 12:00 am (UTC)Ikol is on to something here. Ikol doesn't know if Hela is really Loki's daughter, but what if Loki has done this hiving trick before? Ikol (and indeed Marvel, although Gaiman alluded to it in DC's Sandman) doesn't seem to be very much aware that Loki actually started out as a fire god. What if there's a portion of Loki's heart (and backstory) that has been lost somewhere along the way? What if there's a quest to find it? That would be a story worth telling.
In the meantime we'll have to settle for seeing what a God of Chaos and a mage born of chaos magic (by whatever name Marvel's currently calling it) can get up to.

Date: 2012-07-21 12:29 am (UTC)Also, I'm a little lacking in both Norse mythology and Marvel history; who is the "mage born of chaos magic"?

Date: 2012-07-21 03:02 am (UTC)The Vanir were the gods of the natural forces: Earth, Fire, Water, et al.
The Aesir were the gods of men and men's handiwork: statemanship, war, smithcraft, etc.
Odin made a series of promises to the Vanir, which were carved on the Runestaff. As he broke each promise, the carved words of the vow were gouged out of the staff. Finally Odin's chronic perfidy caused what was left of the Runestaff to break. Among the individual instances were the binding of Fenris and the breaking of the offer of Frigga to the giants who built Asgard, but the Vanir were already suspicious of Odin before the last incident.
In the oldest extant versions the Vanir, being creatures of the natural world, don't tend to break their word, either in compacts with the Aesir or later in vows of vengeance.

Date: 2012-07-21 05:18 pm (UTC)So Odin was a jerk in the original mythology, too?Ahem. This is kind of a silly question, but if I wanted to read about this, would it be found in the Poetic Edda?

Date: 2012-07-21 12:11 am (UTC)I'm not sure I get why Gaea would be upset with Loki's solution the way her fellow goddesses were. She's seen new pantheons rise and supplant old ones umpteen times now, and tends to have a presence in all of them without playing favorites. Is it the urban/technology angle? Or is she aware of the alliance with Surtur behind the scenes?

Date: 2012-07-21 12:40 am (UTC)I didn't think of that before. It would certainly be interesting if she did know. And it would also raise the question of why she didn't inform Loki of it. Trust issues? :0
