Reed Richards does indeed make a valid point that Cap and Iron Man have been escalating things by provoking the X-Men and the Phoenix Five. But in light of what happens in Avengers vs. X-Men #8 and especially Avengers vs. X-Men #9, Reed comes across in this scene like Pierce Brosnan's character in Mars Attacks! who--like virtually every scientist in every sci-fi monster or alien invasion movie ever made--believes that the all-too obviously dangerous menace can be reasoned with, that they're not as dangerous as they appear, and that humanity can learn so much from what they have to offer. And of course, they turn out to be horribly, horribly wrong. Because let's face it, if this scene had been taking place after Ben Grimm got captured and sent to Magik's Limbo prison, or especially after Namor's destruction of Wakanda, and what Emma Frost is currently doing, there's no way Reed would be saying this in light of those events. Because instead of coming across like a voice of reason, he would look like a complete fool.

Most of that stuff still falls under "The only ones getting hurt here are you because you keep poking them with a stick."

And Emma wouldn't be going crazy right now if the power of the Phoenix was still divided among the five X-Men and not just her and Scott.

Shit, I'm sure Reed would be ready to go rescue him the moment he finds out what happened to Ben as well as come up with a device that will seriously fuck the Phoenix 5 up. For all his faults, Reed is the one person I can see who'd be able to do that.

In all honesty I gave up trying to find the sanity of this event. Awful characterization, offensive implications, no Northstar. Considering all the awful things the Avengers have contributed to this event, nothing short of public humiliation or getting fined for their awful list of ideas would help me to pick up a book with Tony and Steve in the future.

Yea, but Doom's a case where it's the wrong hands getting ahold of it to begin with; cosmic power doesn't make him evil, he's already evil and cosmic power just makes him more dangerous.

Like Reed notes, they are allies and they are trying to help and the worry is they won't be able to control it.

.... you know, with all things considered... did the Shi'ar EMpire, or those involved in the situation, actually offered ANY form of apology when they killed Jean's relatives out of pure fundamental fear that they may become hosts of the Phoenix due to bloodlines? I mean, the AVengers, members of a race of humans that constantly are being look down on (even by themselves) broke and "tame" the Phoenix without really killing anyone and did the earth, if not the universe, a solid... but a bunch of self glorified killed a bunch of people for a pointless safety percussion, leading to ALOT of things to get worst from that, and yet still feel high and mighty...

Why was Dr. Strange even in this issue? Xavier at least had something to say in this issue, but Strange shows up, goes "Namor isn't coming." Then says nothing important before repeating that Namor isn't coming, then leaves.

I agree with you on the comic issue at hand, but I can't say I agree with you on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was a thoroughly terrible choice, but it beat the alternative.

I can't buy Reed's argument and I can't figure out why Cap and Tony are going for it either. "Are you scared that the phenomenal cosmic power will destroy too much ... or are you scared you'll get your feelings hurt?" Seriously? I don't think they're quite that petty.

Tony's commentary is much appreciated though.
