Avengers Assmble? Well...Sort of...
Aug. 10th, 2012 09:08 pmI'm sure some of you fine folks are aware that Marvel made an announcement that Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel) and Stefano Caselli (Amazing Spider-Man) will be the new creative team for Avengers Assemble this November, replacing Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. Marvel was even kind enough to put out a promotional poster for it:

Now if some of you are thinking, "hmm, something doesn't seem quite right about this image," you're not alone. Turns out some eagle-eyed observers noticed that the artwork looked a little bit too much like Steve McNiven's rather than Caselli's. In fact, they noticed that it looked a little bit too much like this promotional cover for Avengers #24.1:

But I'm sure it's just our collective imaginations at work. After all, it's not like Marvel would do something incredibly lazy like Photoshopping an already existing piece of art from one comic book series in order to try and pass it off as original artwork for another, now would they? Nah, anybody can see that these two pictures look "totally different," right? :-p
Seriously, Marvel, you couldn't use Caselli's own artwork to promote the series he's going to be illustrating?

Date: 2012-08-11 08:42 am (UTC)I mean it's not a tracing by one artist of another (so this does not reflect badly on Caselli the way Land's efforts do), it's the exact same art with a new piece of colouring and the name of the original arti.... Oh screw it, y'know what, I can't even bother to defend something this lazy. I feel sorry for Caselli though.

Date: 2012-08-11 09:49 am (UTC)As it is, I just hope they paid McNiven again. And the new colourist. Otherwise, I couldn't care less. 'Eagle-eyed observers' with nothing better to do kicking up a fuss over nothing.
