I'm sure some of you fine folks are aware that Marvel made an announcement that Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel) and Stefano Caselli (Amazing Spider-Man) will be the new creative team for Avengers Assemble this November, replacing Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley.  Marvel was even kind enough to put out a promotional poster for it:

Now if some of you are thinking, "hmm, something doesn't seem quite right about this image," you're not alone.  Turns out some eagle-eyed observers noticed that the artwork looked a little bit too much like Steve McNiven's rather than Caselli's.  In fact, they noticed that it looked a little bit too much like this promotional cover for Avengers #24.1

But I'm sure it's just our collective imaginations at work.  After all, it's not like Marvel would do something incredibly lazy like Photoshopping an already existing piece of art from one comic book series in order to try and pass it off as original artwork for another, now would they? Nah, anybody can see that these two pictures look "totally different," right? :-p

Seriously, Marvel, you couldn't use Caselli's own artwork to promote the series he's going to be illustrating?

I didn't think you could get more lazy than Greg Land, but at least it's not a porn tracing? :P

Well, technically I suppose they don't actually SAY it's Caselli's art on the new poster, they're just making an announcement with a stock image.

I mean it's not a tracing by one artist of another (so this does not reflect badly on Caselli the way Land's efforts do), it's the exact same art with a new piece of colouring and the name of the original arti.... Oh screw it, y'know what, I can't even bother to defend something this lazy. I feel sorry for Caselli though.

I don't think it's lazy. It's a bold enough yet standard piece of Avengers imagery that looks pretty good, just with a recoloured Hulk and background. As a promo piece, I don't see anything wrong with it. There's nothing saying Marvel can't do this, and Caselli's been shown on Secret Warriors to be someone who A - doesn't always do the cover art for his stories and B - maybe works a little slower than some.

As it is, I just hope they paid McNiven again. And the new colourist. Otherwise, I couldn't care less. 'Eagle-eyed observers' with nothing better to do kicking up a fuss over nothing.

It's not inspiring as a company's vote of confidence in the title's new artist to not actually feature his art in the advertising, but not the outrage it would be if Caselli were responsible for the the art of the promo and turned in a tracing of another artists' work.

At least he's not David Mack, y'know?

Wow. That's incredibly lazy. Also an odd choice because while I really like McNiven's work, this isn't that great a piece. Though on the third look, I think my disinterest in the art is due to the colors looking a touch too vivid and the inks being too heavy.

Well, that was kind of a lazy move from someone at Marvel. Couldn't they have at least recycled something from one of the artists on the new team, if they couldn't be arsed to get one new piece of promotional art made?

Besides poster fail, can I just say that I am so happy DeConnick is FINALLY getting the respect she deserves? Captain Marvel is awesome and now she's writing the Avengers!

And besides, I've always liked Casellis art since he did that YA/Runaways crossover. Excited!

Ye gods, Marvel. I'm too tired to spout more sarcasm at you than I already have. Lazy. Fail. Poster.

That's one of the laziest moves I've seen from Marvel, yet!
