Well, that's pretty much the case of every version of the Punisher that isn't written by Garth Ennis or Greg Rucka.

By the same token Deadpool is a throwback to the 90s that's only survived by devolving into self-parody, like Lobo was intended to do. Not that this stopped Liefeld from creating another Serious version of Deadpool in his own imprint when he felt that the original had become a "joke". Which itself weird as Wade started in as a Deathstroke rip-off, but there you go.

Really? IIRC Deathstroke at the time of Deadpool's introduction was still a brilliant, strategic, mercenary assassin with a deep, if warped, sense of honour.

Deadpool was a smartarse "merc with a mouth" and not much in the way of compunctions about anything. He wasn't the loon he ended up being, but he was very different in style to the much more professional Slade.

Liefeld's all but openly admitted that it was an attempt to capitalise on how cool he thought Deathstroke was when he made Deadpool. Right down to the matching actual names.

Again, it's Liefeld, so.. You know. His interpretation of Deathstroke might not go beyond 'mercenary badass'.

I always saw it like this:
Liefeld wanted to make this "cool" "badass" anti-Spider, with weapons, shoulder pads, belts, etc.
Fabian Nicieza co-created the character as sort of Deathstroke parody, similar to DC's merc only talking all the time mocking the situations and all.
And it was Joe Kelly who made something out of the character, a fun parody of 90s characters, meta and fun. (with his own Weapon X project, his own over-the-top villains such as T-Ray)

A 3 man job really.

(and then, nowadays, Daniel Way happened and turned it into a crossover tie-in one-note joke character... -sigh-)

Liefeld was only drawing him, it's Nicieza who wrote it as a smartass from the start.

I was under the impression that Deadpool can survive such trivialities as a bullet to the brain. Why is he acting so panicked?

Apparently in his own book he took a serum that fixed his looks and, thus, dulled his healing factor.

Funny thing about Ant-Man's "Zombie Nixon" line is that apparently the first storyline for the new Deadpool ongoing for Marvel Now is that he has to face off against Zombie Presidents and apparently one of the Founding Fathers will become a "voice" in Wade's head.
