...Yeah, I'm looking forward to Lobdell getting on this book. Say what you will about the man (I actually like his work more often than not), but at least the stuff he writes is actually interesting and doesn't put me to sleep.

Clark bungy-jumping with Lucy was a kinda fun moment, though.

how can a story involving a faux Predator and a tentacle monster and a nuke be so boring?

I don't know. I also don't know why Jurgens was considered a good Superman writer in the 90s, between the bits I've read of that era and this.

Depends on what stuff you've read, honestly. His work during some of the 90s run wasn't spectacular, but was never bad that I can recall. Sometimes it was quite good. Sometimes his stuff just falls into the 'standard comics' mold, but usually it's solid entertainment.

But this seems pretty bland. But honestly, if George Perez failed making this incarnation of Superman interesting, I'm not sure I can fault Jurgens for doing any differently.

Considering what Perez said after he left the book (lots of contradictory editorial interference, basically) it doesn't sound like any writer could make this book interesting.

:(

In fairness to the military, is it "paranoid" when the alien HAS killed hundreds of people?

Yeah, that's kind of where I lose it for Superman here, I think. He gets a little preachy, but understandably so, but then immediately after saying "You can't leave, you have to stay to be held accountable for the hundreds and hundreds of people you killed." "No! Not a nuke against the escaped weaponized alien that killed hundreds of people, how could they be so reckless!"

Using a nuke on anything that kills less people than a nuke is pretty paranoid, I'd say.

Using a nuke on something which has killed less than a nuke so far.

They have no reason to believe it would stop killing, as they wouldn't be aware that it was opening a stargate thingie to leave.

Like I haven't read the book so I don't know what circumstances of the deaths were, but it seems like a single humanoid would have to keep killing for just a ridiculously long time to be able to kill as many people as a nuke. Something it would not be able to do because, y'know, people like Superman exist. Like if they nuked every threat like that in the DC universe the entire world would be a radioactive wasteland.
