Avengers (Vol. 3) #76
Sep. 10th, 2012 06:32 pmAvengers #76 is an interesting little issue. This was the last issue by Geoff Johns. It features Cassie Lang's last appearance as a civilian. It features the death of Jack of Hearts (which people seem to cite to Bendis but all Bendis did was have Wanda turn him into a zombie time bomb).
Our story begins with Cassie seeing some kids bullying some ants. She doesn't like it.

A bit of backstory is required to put the rest in context. At this point in time, Scott was going through a rough time as he had lost his custody battle with his ex-wife for Cassie. His aggravation was also taken out on Jack of Hearts (who was going through a rough patch because he had to spend most hours of his day inside a room that could control his energies so he wouldn't explode.)
Anyways, somebody ends up kidnapping Cassie (and he had already killed his own daughter in the past), which freaks Scott the hell out.

(That part of the issue where the guy wants to kill Cassie while she's still young and innocent is REALLY awkward now.)
So of course Scott fights this man who threatened his daughter and takes his gun from him. But Jack of Hearts has something to say.

(Scott is what tvtropes would refer to as a "Papa Wolf.")

Cassie: Daddy, what happened? Who was that?
Scott: Who was he? An Avenger, Cassie. An Avenger.
(Incidentally, we don't have a tag for Jack of Hearts.)

Date: 2012-09-11 08:03 am (UTC)If makes sense for people to believe it if they believe in reincarnation and it's a part of their religion, but as part of some kind of New Agey thing that saying it's cruel to eat plants and that primative, one celled organisms eating other such things is "murder and cannibalism" like Marville said... it's more than a little stupid.

Date: 2012-09-11 06:31 pm (UTC)Just saying that it's cruel that micro-organisms eat each other implies that they have a concept of sadism or sentience or something, which is kind of ridiculous.

Date: 2012-09-12 09:17 am (UTC)Even ignoring the fact that insets have a semi-complex social structure while plants are basically colonies of cells, the point is that killing for food is not immoral, killing for fun is.

I really like Scott's costume, a lot, and this is nice.
Cassie's death is really not bothering me, or awkward as you say it is.

"...Why did you explode him?"
"He killed his daughter, attempting to find out why and trying to correct it would be useless."
"What makes him different from any of the other murderous lunatics we fight on a daily basis then?"
"This guy couldn't fight back."

Date: 2012-09-11 07:42 pm (UTC)I doubt this'll ever come back to haunt him, but there's certainly scope for some sort of prosecution there ("you executed a criminal, Jack - who do you think you are, Frank Castle?").
