The card reminds me of a time I tried to draw a parody of the ass n' boobs pose. A parody that apparently fails by virtue of not being exaggerated enough.

Dustin Nguyen... never seen him asa very good comic artist. Grown out of his style to be honest.

from what i read Guillem DID do a few of the less provacative sketches... he always does actually, and editorial ALWAYS chooses these, (or tells him to draw it like this)

I always thought the spine WAS the main problem, in that March originally had it bent so that it was almost at a 90 degree angle.

Yeah but it's still bent the same, only we can see MORE of it, so it's an even less anatomically sound picture.

I mean look at the first photo an how heavily arched up her spine is, turning her into a ball essentially. The new pose is more anatomically correct, it could be done, or at least get something close enough to it. So I can agree that it's an improvement.

At least in the sense that if they release this one first, there'd be far less of an issue.

I don't know about that--it seems like now more of the bend is on the shoulders and not in the middle of the spine.

I don't trust it as an improvement at all. My eyes feel fobbed off; I think the original was just more obviously contorted because we're used to seeing heroines contorted but not circular.

Yeah, I have to agree. With more of her lower back visible, the middle section of her spine must be contorted even more sharply to result in her upper torso pointing straight out of the page. Also her hand is huge.

On the plus side, her head is positioned much better relative to her shoulders.

One thing that I REALLY love about the new cover is the colors for it. Never was a huge fan of Selina in blue/grey. The shiny black leather looks better and, quite frankly, sexier to me. :D

It's less traumatizing to be sure, I applaud the artists.
But they make up for the oversexuality by making her overly leather shiny, so... as they said, not quite "good" but better.

It's still a pretty silly pose, and it doesn't look at all like she's bursting through the cover, which totally throws the background concept out the window. But it does have the effect of highlighting just how terrible the original design was, so that's a plus.

Still out of proportion. Those legs, wtf that front leg, imagine straightening that out, not to mention it doesn't actually match the back one even if you take into account foreshortening and I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to see quite that much boob but I couldn't say for certain.

Don't even get me started on the Black Canary one. I might end up doing another submit to Escher girls.

Still has issues, but I like the second cover better. I find it funny that so much uproar was had over this cover when March also did a cover for Green Lantern New Guardians which I find about ten times more horrific then the Catwoman one.

Although I guess it's nice to see that Guillem March is an equal opportunity spine breaker since basically everyone on the cover, men, women, and aliens alike are in painful looking poses. I've gotta say, I feel massive pain whenever I look at Kyle on that cover, though. Ouch.

I think I was distracted from seeing Carol's butt just by the fact that I was happy she was wearing an outfit that fully covers her for once. Granted, the black and pink combo looks a little...odd, but at least she's not falling out of her suit for once. Yay for slight progress. lol.

Heh, the last time there was a convo about Kori and her spine breaking poses, I basically made the same point. Like, well, her people are supposed to be like part cat or something, right? And I know my cats can do some cuh-razy things with their spines, so maybe her spine IS supposed to be making her butt and boobs stick out like that constantly.

As for the aliens on the cover, I'd assume that Saint Walker and Larfleeze could maybe be all bendy like that since they are kind of thin and gangly, but I highly doubt Arkillo and Atrocitus could bend that much. Though I am sadly not an expert on whatever kind of aliens all of them are, so who knows. lol.

I mean, the cleavage isn't really necessary. Of course Catwoman has to be sexy, that's her power as an icon--in and outside of comics. But for god's sake, she wears a skintight leather(or vinyl) fetish outfit that in fact at this point is NAMED AFTER HER. By relying on the cleavage, well, you're just being lazy and not using the natural advantages of said outfit. But then, I imagine an untalented artist has a tougher time depicting that material on a body than just drawing a pair of breasts bursting out of it. Which is also kind of ridiculous also because then the whole thing comes open. The first one shows an artist who obviously hasn't the slightest idea how that outfit really works on a body.

You basically want, with this kind of outfit, to be thinking, "What would Frank Quitely do?" (or Howard Chaykin, another master of actually making plausible sexy outfits)

What I'm saying is that in fact that first picture made her LESS sexy, and in fact kind of laughable. The second one, though no masterpiece, accomplishes the goal more elegantly.

Not really seeing that, but personally, I find FQ's output about as sexy as frog dissections (and my apologies for those whose personal turn ons include frog dissections). His faces tend to look constipated and he adds way too many lines to faces in places that make them look wizened.

My main thought on the Black Canary card?

She's relatively not terrible for an Escher Girl... The boobs are too big, and there's no way to get them and the butt in those poses at the same time, but...at least her midsection can contain her organs, and the artist opted for a single impossible pose for her spine, rather than turning her into a full-on corkscrew (and only slightly centaurish).
