The boys all see the Bat-signal in the sky. Unknowingly by them that they all will be connected to the symboy in the future.

I like Young!Dick's costume, but it is more Blue Phoenix than Nightwing, IMHO.

Are they keeping the whole "Clark Kent told Dick a Kryptonian legend" as an explanation for the Nightwing name?

These are nice little vignettes, though them all being so close in age at the same time is more than a little odd.

Jason and Dick are closer though, but that said, Dick does look a BIT older...

Agreed. For a second, I thought they were all Damian going through some bizarre, Morrison-esque mind experiment where he has to experience the lives of all the other Robins to surpass them (course I don't see a Stephanie Brown anywhere; that've been fun)

This is nice, but I don't know, kind of off. I don't think Jason should be involved in any murder, and while I do enjoy seeing Tim Nancy Drew it up, it just seems a little too "he's a detective, see?" to me. the Dick segment is okay I guess, though I don't like him being some cocky crime stopping cool dude before he met Bruce.
I think that my biggest problem with this is that it's a little to on the nose and in you face about the boys characterization. Jason's a street kid, so he's an unwillingly accessory to a murder, Tim a detective so he's busting criminals on his own, Nancy Drew style, and Dick is the cocky fun one, so of course he stops a purse snatcher and makes a lame joke. It makes it seem like the boys weren't shaped so much by Bruce, but were always these people, now they just have costumes.
And there's all too old. I don't care about the stupid new timeline, they're all too old. Dick is supposed to be, like, 12 years old, MAX when he gets taken in, and the other two are most at least 5 years younger than him.

I actually LIKE this idea. Bruce gave them something else. An outlet? he took what was already there and built on that...

It's already been established in Nightwing, though, that Dick's parents were killed when he was 16 or so, so, yeah, he was fully formed when he went into the Robinternship, which seems to last a year. (Same with the Batgirl gig, apparently, so maybe there was room for Steph's Batgirl Summer?)

And it all feels very rushed and mushed up together, and you have to accept the idea that all these have been Robin in the space of 5 years. If they want this reboot crap to work then they shouldn't force you to think about this stuff and realize inescapably how absurd it is.

Urgh. That's terrible. Also terrible: that Red Hood mask. Seriously, the classic version, with or without the marvelous cape, was perfectly fine. A good, solid look. This version just looks goofy, really goofy.

That's what he always used to be. Up until "The Killing Joke" put his past in doubt, The Red Hood was already a successful criminal.

It wouldn't be the first time someone did an origin of Joker formerly being a criminal mastermind. My guess, it's all a misdirection and one of the red hood goons is the joker.

Doesn't make a bit of chronological sense. Forget continuity, this strains internal plausibility. For this to work all of them would have had to be Robin at the same time. Except it's already been established that Dick is much, much older. This is a car wreck.

And what Jason did will work great till the guy comes to and mentions Jason was his accomplice. Snyder really assumes no one's paying attention, doesn't he?

Dick is not "much much older" that's been one of the problems in the DCnU, he's 21, and was 16 before he became Robin at all.
Jason is currently about 19
Tim is currently about 17,

Brown? I see them as a light grey here, possibly blue-ish, but muddied by the reflection of street lights.

They're fierce eyes, but beautiful, maybe a little injured... bruised... world weary beyond his years... but still essentially innocen--I'm letting myself get carried away here aren't I?

Anyway, no. His eyes are still blue in RHATO.

Maybe I'm weird, but I just can't bring myself to care about pre-Robin flashbacks. I don't want canon on Dick and Jason's pre-Robin days. They'd get it wrong and also I think it's very limiting - and exceedingly twee.

Or maybe it's just that these are boring. They don't show anything new about the characters, and even the old stuff isn't done in an interesting way. If they gave me the "Dick Grayson's maternal grandfather tries to mend things with his estranged daughter who ran away and joined the circus, and her family" and compare and contrast Dick's reaction then with how he views his familial bond with Bruce, maybe I'd be interested. (To be fair, maybe they did do that story.) If they told the story of "how a Crime Alley hooker got Jason's mom her medication, and Jason got a girl away from her attackers and got beat up for his troubles", I'd really wanna read that. But I don't trust DC with these two's backstories.

I'm interested in a lot more concerning Tim's pre-Robin days. I could read about Tim being a Robin-obsessed little stalker and his lying to his distant-to-neglectful parents all day.

My reaction to this: I ain't even mad.

This sure is a messed-up Elseworld, isn't it? Barely time to pull on the pixie boots before the next Robin comes along.

I REALLY dislike Dick being so much older before Bruce took him in in this Elseworld. To me, Dick being a child when he meets Bruce makes him so much more vulnerable and in need of protection rather than a 16-year-old who can fend for himself. But I've said this before: taking away Dick's origin as a Boy Wonder and making him a Teen Wonder for a year and erasing his leadership of the Teen Titans removes something important from his background. But then, how does this reboot NOT take away and stingily give back? *shrugs* Be grateful that there's fanfic and the older issues to enjoy.

It changes the relationship with Bruce in every way, but one of the saddest is you lose that genuinely earned sadness at the passage of time. I mean, it used to be that Bruce adopted Dick when he was a child. Dick's always been fairly open emotionally but of course he was even more so as a kid, as kid's are. So Bruce had to deal with someone who once trusted him completely and just worshiped him and wanted to be just like him becoming a teenager who naturally wanted to be independent and realized that he wasn't just a carbon copy of Bruce. Which was a big learning experience for Bruce that made it possible for him to deal with other people.

In this Elseworld Bruce just deals with it by never really having to commit to any relationship. He apparently just needed some adolescents to help with the crime fighting. Maybe he offered them college credit for the job.

I don't think I like the idea of Bruce being an in any way competent crimefighter before becoming Batman. I greatly prefer the Year One version, where before becoming Batman he doesn't have the right mindset, he's just a guy with some skills He was still a badass and everything, beating up a pimp, but he's also a bit putzy, afterwards the prostitutes come after him, probably seeing him as just some psycho (sidenote, I find the bit where he fights the hookers funny, because I picture Frank Miller just going "An then Batman fights some whores whores whores whores!") and he gets arrested and nearly thrown in jail. He's just some guy then, it's only when he becomes Batman that he's more than a disgruntled rich guy with some karate lessons and a big budget.
Man, I like Scott Snyder, but I am positively recoiling from virtually every retcon and flashback shown in the New 52.
