sherkahn: (Headmaster Logan)
[personal profile] sherkahn posting in [community profile] scans_daily
In stand-alone issue #17, this title returns to form, returning to its roots based in humor and fun within the Marvel mutant universe, with a focus on what exactly Doop does for the Jean Grey school. The WHOLE dang issue deserves to be on Scans_Daily for a lot of reasons because of the art, the humor, the situations, the moments of heroism and depravity.

Seriously, make sure you have your big kid pants on and take a gut check before reading on, as this will make you fall of your chair laughing.

Doop - Best there is at what he does, and what he does....

Wolverine has to bend over backwards and jump through hoops to get Doop to agree to work at the school. Here are some of his errands.

(and yes, I know what you are thinking. Today the role of a fun-loving Wolverine will be played by shirtless Hugh Jackman.)

And you may ask... what EXACLTY does Doop do for the school?

Take one for the team.... frequently.

No,seriously, I picked it up Friday and caught myself laughing during the weekend at odd moment because I remembered a few of the hilarious panels.

Are they TRYING to make him turn evil?

Well, he was already a member of X-Statix. So being a little evil isn't really out of the question.

Doop and Squirrel Girl should have a baby. It would be the single most powerful being ever to grace the pages of the Marvel Universe.

Or any other universe.

Also, Doop and Daken should hook up. I've read Doop's issue of Marvel Romance, I can see it working.

Could you explain what Doop is? Never seen the character before, so I'm missing how he's normally portrayed.

Cheers!

Much like Darkseid, Doop.... is.

It's apparently a holdover from a US Cold War experiment, and it was involved, somehow, in the fall of the Soviet Union.

That's about all that is known about it.

Doop has an explanation, but the explanation isn't the point. He's a weird floaty green alien-looking dude who does stuff and doesn't talk.

Enigmatic non-humanoid, possibly mutant and/or alien, possibly Omega-level if the former. (From Wikipedia: "when Thor struck Doop with his hammer, Mjolnir, Doop absorbed the hammer into his body and fired Mjolnir and a number of duplicate hammers from his mouth at Thor.")

Superhero Roller Durby? Why isn't that a thing?!

I can see some teams now: Team Avengers, lead by She Hulk, Tigra and Doop, with Lyra and a few reserve Avengers and Academy kids filling out the team.

Team Groovy with Dazzler, Black Cat, Misty Knight, Coleen Wing, Tarantula and a few other street heroes of funkiness.

Team X-Gals with Rogue, Psylocke, Storm, Kitty and a few other X-ladies.

And a few super-villainess teams (One lead by Scienstis Supreem of AIM Monica Rapaciini, another by Madam Hydra, another by Mystique)all compete for fun, glory and cosmic prizes--so decrees the Grandmaster!

It's like the under-used Unlimited Class Wrestling. The possibilities for fun are everywhere, but I bet Marvel would rather focus on the seedy underbelly of such things.

There was a Dazzler-Misty-Colleen roller derby story within the past couple of years. It's collected in the "Protect and Serve" trade, I think, which is worth purchasing for the Anole and Rockslide crimefighting story alone.

That's why I mentioned that team specifically. I need to pick up that trade for it, and the Anole/Rockslide story.

This was such a great issue, and I'm always happy to see Michael Allred's art.
It's a pity you couldn't post the recap page, it's a simple but excellent joke; "Lots of things happened, but don't worry your pretty little head about it. Enjoy!"
I actually picked this issue up to give the book a second chance, I'd been waiting for AvX to end so I could get onboard, only to find the last issue both uncompelling as a new reader and linked to AvX, so when this issue turned out to great I was immensely pleased.

Awww This title gets all the fun.

Then Uncanny gets all the grit and we say Team Scott are evil and terrible compared to Team Wolverine.

Hmm.

Anyway, Doops pretty cool, fun... I want X-Statix back.

I wouldn't say Uncanny was "gritty" per se, it just dealt with higher stakes and wasn't quite as zany. I really wish we could have gotten to see what Gillen's run would have been like if he didn't have to lead it up to AVX.

'relative' grit, to be more accurate. One was the fun zany book where the characters had it pretty easy, the other was somewhat serious and and felt like it was actually happening.

Both are canon, and to have this as a result right after Schism is annoying, not a fair playing field.

Then AvX made everything odd and annoying.

probably the one good thing about AVX is that, when it's worked out that it's going to run late and not all the titles are going to be able to tie in directly, they've thrown in one-issue guest slots or vignettes focusing on side characters we wouldn't have got otherwise. This looks like it's going to be the best of the bunch.

Am I the only one who just doesn't get Doop? This issue just left me cold. Doop is cool, he can do anything, and he gets all the ladies (and men). Okay? I'm just not seeing the appeal.

The way I interpret him is that he's the pure comic book id--no real pathos or angst, just the epitome of the weird shit that can only be done in superhero comics.

It think it might be kind of similar to the appeal of Squirrel Girl, there's this ridiculous little alien who can take on all comers, the very idea that Doop of all people is force to be reckoned with is amusing. The only difference is that Squirrel Girl is happy go lucky whereas Doop is amoral and slovenly, he's just a different sort of comedy character turned unexpected badass.

It's never just you, but I feel that quite a lot about this book in general, it's trying so hard with it's "Look, I'm wacky, LOVE ME!" undertones that though there is a fun idea or two, I just can't get into it the way it wants me too.

But I'm an old fart so I'm finding that more and more with life in general! :)

I have much the same reaction to the comic. Unsure if I qualify as an old fart - I'm 31 and I've only been reading superheroes comics for 2 years - but yeah, at first it looked good and I liked the first arc and stuff here and there but besides how much its treatment of Kitty and all the female characters but Rachel in general infuriates me, the big issue is that it goes nowhere and it's not as funny as it thinks it is/or tries to be.

A gentleman would never comment on such a thing.

But never mind, I'm significantly older, and very probably fartier, than you are. :)

The only thing which bugs me is the wrestling panel, because it's painfully clear that whoever drew it-- or maybe wrote it-- has absolutely no idea how it works.

Seems to happen often enough when used as a joke; I wonder if this ever happens to boxing, football, baseball, basketball, golf...?
