That was definitely a really well-sequenced bit of suspense. :D

The bit about "hiding under the bed" is very, very creepy, but just... not the Joker to me. That's a Scarecrow sort of a thing to do, the Joker is a showman, a colossal ham, not a guy who hides.

The best showman knows that timing is everything. The jack-in-the-box is no good if it's not in the box to begin with.

I believe the Joker is, like Batman himself, a bit of a kaleidoscope.

Both characters have been around so long, written by so many writers, in so many different ways, that at this point ANY interpretation of them is essentially valid. There is no one Batman, from Adam West doing the Bat-Watusi, to Frank Miller's Dark Knight stomping mutants, to Christian Bale's "WHERE'STHEGURRLLL!?", it's all Batman. And the same goes with the Joker, from the homicidal clown introduced by Kane and Finger to the weird dreadlocked thing from The Batman... This is just another patch sewn into the crazy quilt that is the heritage of the character. So the question isn't whether this is "really" the Joker, but simply whether or not it's an enjoyable read.

I agree it's out of character for him, but I view it as the Joker setting the stage for his upcoming performance.

a character of his old age and popularity has the skills he needs when the writer wants to give it to him.

The Joker is also an expert fighter, knife wielder, chemicals expert, amateur psychiatrist, torturer, and legitimately funny as and when a story demands it.

Jim Gordon has been stricken by the primordial angst of not knowing why the chicken DID cross the road?

The fact he's able to kill three presumably trained police officers without them being able to do anything at all to even inconvenience him (and apparently just because it's dark, when it'd be dark for HIM TOO) is also annoying...

Holy shit that scared the shit out of me. Also the fact that he's using the dark...interesting. That is one of Batman's primary weapons so if Joker is mastering it somehow, the confrontation might be a bit more unique.

Well it's certainly creepy, but I'm a little annoyed by the idea that Joker could kill a bunch of armed cops so easily, especially when they know he's in the room. You'd think that someone other than Gordon at least would think to turn on their flashlight. I dunno, I think they're making him a little overpowered.
Neat though, so I'll read it.
This makes me wonder though, how long has it been since we've seen the Joker do something other than this kind of creepy murderer stuff, like say, build a deathtrap or hold the entire city hostage demanding that Batman do a rendition of the Aristocrats before he'll let anyone go. How long has it has it been since we've seen the Joker do something like that in the main DCU?

I dunno...I'm not really feeling this. It feels to me like the cops are just sitting around letting the Joker kill them. As usual, the Joker has super murder powers because everybody loses any semblance of competence when he's around.

To be fair, though, I'm less than thrilled about the Joker being back, so I'm obviously not the target audience for this one.

I know, right? A room full of armed cops, scared out of their wits is not the ideal hunting ground for someone who can be killed by regular means.
Folks can say all they want about the element of surprise, and the Joker being just that good, but to me it stretches my suspension of disbelief that Gordon's the only one who even tries to defend himself, while everyone else just stands around waiting to die at the hands of a single apparently unarmed man.

Ok.... Ill admit that was kinda freaky, even If I was getting major Doom 3 vibes from the scene. And the fact the Joker routinely hides under his enemys' beds seems rather in character for him come to think of it.

Gordo's reaction in the penultimate page however was a tiny bit narmy though

I suggest a site wide policy of cautious optimism for this comic.

Snyder gave an interview the other day on the storyline. It can be read here: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=41418

I have to admit I am really looking forward to this, as I am a huge fan of the Joker as someone who gets under one's skin.

If it does go where I have the slight feeling it will go, then... Ugh. I'm hoping it's Joker actually just giving her her old 'classic' outfit back for a star performance in his game, given the cover of one of the Suicide Squad issues isn't so negative in it's implications as even the Batgirl ones.

But as it is, whoever posted that - I'm assuming it's Rich Johnston - posted it KNOWING he'd get that kind of reaction from you.

As it is, I'm actually kind of glad Capullo's been able to do some kind of modification to Joker's face. I'm not sure if it's just his style, but the Joker's regular face on Bruce's screens just doesn't look that intimidating, somehow.

I'm still of the impression that there's actually more going on with his face beneath the sliced-off face-skin mask than we're aware of.

So, the Joker can see in the dark now? And apparently scatter a group of cops enough to kill five of them practically on top of Gordon, even while he's waving a torch around?

Okay, what the f*** ever.
