As for whether Superman has died and returned in this continuity, Morrison said, "YES. A lot of that stuff happened, you'll see in Action Comics #15, #16, and #17, a lot of that stuff that happened."

Not feeling it as Doomsday. As a new character the design works, even works for other characters from Krypton.

Which is what it should be - a new character. Instead of trying to shoe-horn old storylines into what is essential a complete reboot (especially for Superman) they should just say "No Doomsday. Superman faced some other guy" and then create a new character. Part of what made the Death of Superman story work was the effect it had on various OTHER characters who had known Superman/Clark for years and the world where Superman had been active for a decade or so. With this timeline where Superman has been active for 5 years (according to DC), has no relationships with Lois or the Justice League or the other heroes comparable to what he had pre-reboot, the story just doesn't work the same. AT ALL.

Just be honest and upfront and start over 100%- because that's already basically what you've done 99% of the way.

So Doomsday is basically the Superdoom guy we saw in Action #9? I can live with that.

So he will have had died? Future past tense hurts my brain.

Basically, at some point during his five year career, Superman died while fighting a being called Superdoom, or "Super Doomsday." Morrison will apparently cover this and a lot of the key points in Superman's history in the last three issues of his run on Action Comics.

Wait a minute. DC are you actually trying to tell me that within the five years that the heroes have been active and known to the public, Superman has died and come back?

While this isn't as bad (imo) as the compressed Bat-family timeline, I'm just wondering how much of the old continuity has happened within five years.

ETA: Or is this something that's going to happen? The new timeline is giving me a headache...

Given Morrison seems to be leapfrogging to various spots and connecting different stories together, it sounds to me like he'll be covering how the New52 death of Superman did happen, not that it's something about to happen in DC's present time.

He's Espada -1 i.e. More powerful than Aizen!

And now wonder the Vandenreich are so powerful, they must be the Arrancar of the guys who created Doomsday!

That said,DOOMSDAY IS A HOLLOW!, this would be made of so much win.

...And I think I've just gotten another idea for my mega crossover fanmake series.

That X on his chest...can't help but wonder if this means his new origin has Lex Luthor involved in his creation.

I was thinking it was looking like a heavily stylised hammer and sickle and he/it might be Russian.

Nope--this is a callback to what Morrison established in Action Comics #9. Basically, in an alternate world, Clark, Jimmy and Lois create this character that was supposed to be the perfect figure of heroism called "Superman." To help further develop the character, the three sign off the rights to their creation to a massive corporation (headed by The Little Man, a fifth dimensional being that's basically been controlling things from the sidelines throughout Morrison's run on Action). In signing the character off, it got changed and corrupted and when it manifested into reality, found a way to jump through dimensions to destroy their Superman.

In the issue, the three original creators find themselves in Earth-23, a world where almost all the major heroes are black, including their Superman, who's also President of the United States in his civilian identity. There, the creators and their Superman fight him and are able to trap him.

...And considering that you name-dropped Superdoom in that above post, I may have just schooled you on something for no reason, sorry about that.

Yeah, "that stuff happened", it's one of those "tell, and don't show" deals, right? Like how Libra was to be the mastermind that lead to the events to Final Crisis?

From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
Well, the idea of Morrison's final arc is to show the key points to Superman's history in the New 52.

Libra wasn't the mastermind, he was the prophet.

I expect it's going to be more like Batman Last Rites, only with less mind-altering substances. Maybe.

not to beat a dead horse or anything, but i keep getting the feeling no one at DC quite understands how reboots work. HEY GUYS EVERYTHING YOU REMEMBER ITS ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT. BUT ALSO HEY GUYS EVERYTHING HAPPENED TOO BUT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY.

Characters are always going to need backstory. Even brand new ones do.

While it is probable that they wanted to bring back Doomsday as part of the 20th anniversary of the death of Superman (1992, or was it 1993?), it is obvious it will not pack the same value as the original.

I dig the X symbol and new face but I am having a hard time believing this is the new design for Doomsday. As stated before, this looks more like a super Luthor-bot rather than a Kryptonian killing machine/entity.

I'm intrigued I guess. It's kind of weird to try to fit it into the current DCU, given that they don't have the same sort of established community that the old one had when Superman originally died, so I'm wondering how this'll work out. I hope he does something with the Reign of the Supermen, I always thought that was a cool idea.
