For all the kind words following my ascension to Mod-hood.
My tendency towards the... Robin-centric end of the comic book spectrum was noted more than once in those accolades... and who am I to buck a trend?

Alas this story from 1965 is only a 14 page story, so I've had to really hack it up!
We open with Dick and Bruce having breakfast, with Dick being annoyed that a newspaper gossip columnist is speculating that Robin is getting annoyed with Batman taking all the glory, and cites a recent case he had actually seen the finale of, as Batman closes in on Keller, the leader of a criminal gang.

Dick feels that this is a ridiculous claim and Bruce agrees with him... or does he...

Batman is summoned to Gordon's office....

I adore that Gordon thinks of Robin as being of an age where he'd have "playmates" (It should come as no surprise that this is before Babs introduction to the Batverse as no one with kids would have ever used the term about someone who about 15 or 16)
Meanwhile, Dick decides to pay a call on a pal... okay that's a little better than playmates I suppose... Could this be Dick's equivalent of Tommy Elliott?

I know what "gabfest" really means, but I like to think it was their secret word for cosplay fun times.... ANYWAY, that's their business, not ours... and they're still too young to be legal.

What COULD they be discussing? Anyway, in an effort to find out what he's up to Dick spins Tom a yarn about seeing the light and wanting to drop out of school and join his gang. Tom is happy to hear this and decides to take Dick to their next "meeting".
It's based out of an old gymnasium where professional wrestlers are rehearsing their acts....

Okay, one Robin is good taste, two Robin's is a little weird, three and over at the same time is way more of a fetish than I've ever had...

Dick manages to overhear that Mr Craig is a criminal mastermind, who uses the gym as a front for his actions. The current plan is for "The Robin Gang" to scatter across the city and each commit a crime at midnight because... well, because is sort of vague, discredit Robin for some reason most likely... take advantage of the number of dark haired kids who are hanging around? Whatever...
Dick escapes from the room, and heads into the city, looking for Tom, to try and stop him. He changes into Robin en route....
Batman is also on patrol, by himself... and is obviously feeling lonely...

Dick has taken to the rooftops to try and see Tom, which he does, and spots the path across the roofs that he must be planning on taking..

Batman manages to land safely, but he clearly has alpha male issues, and though he saves Robin from his clumsy fall...

Which they do...

Batman and Robin have also headed back to the gym, and after a not terribly impressive fight scene with the professional wrestlers the Dynamic Duo catch the bad guys, with Robin punching Craig's lights out.

And so the real reason for Robin's little blunders over the past few weeks are explained! (I confess to being impressed by an optometrist who can make accurate assessments of eye problems through a domino mask which may have lenses, but that might be par for the course in Gotham City)
As for how it ended for the other Robin's? Well, it's not gone into, but I imagine there was a scene something like this one.

Date: 2012-10-23 11:01 pm (UTC)I find it amusing that the optometrist is so blasé about treating Batman's sidekick. And also that he looks like every other older man who ever appeared in a DC Golden Age book.
