Ok, this has been touched on briefly before as 'grim-and-gritty' Transformers, which is odd considering that it's the original Marvel series, continuing past 80.  The art style evokes the character designs of that series, and the 80's cartoon. This week #85 came out, and this is the first page...

So what lead up to it?  For 20 years, the Autobots have known peace on Cybertron, but they didn't know that Megatron was active on Earth.  It's not a happy place.  Megatron has created an army of... Zombiecons. (2 pages from #82)

Yeah, he melted down his own soldier's minds and turned them into automatons.  They don't think, they don't feel, they just follow orders with brutal efficiency. Except for these two poor bastards that is.  They're investigating Autobot escape pods that just landed on-planet.  A small crew was checking out Earth and got shot down in space.  So, what happened to earth?  Let's have a native fill in those blanks. (5 pages from #83)

Spike Witwicky, now Circuit Smasher.  He's been modified by G.B. Blackrock, using technology pioneered by Circuit Breaker. They still can't use her, but she gets a nameless cameo and a roundabout mention as a 'former employee'.  Remember, in this series, Buster was the Autobot's primary human contact, along with Sparkplug.  Spike shows up much later in his series (brothers). Now, about that Armageddon I mentioned...

Fast-forward to the here-and-now.  Springer's been sending a distress signal back to Cybertron, and the Autobots there also find this transmission.

Ok, back on Earth, things aren't going well for one of the Autobot teams.  The forces that were there have split up.  Some are going after the Ark, and some are going to rescue Kup (who has been moved to Washington DC and infected with Scraplets.) Springer here was with the rescue team, and we continue on... (the last 3 pages from #84)

All three lines of Transformer comics are BAD-ASS! The fight in issue #85 is the *whole book*.

So Circuit Breaker's still Marvel-owned? Any scans of her cameo here?

I understand she is, after all they specificaly added a cameo by her into Secret Wars II before her Transformers appearance to maintain control of her.

But Marvel does let Dynamite use Kulan Gath, another character they made for Conan. So I don't know why they care so much about Circuit Breaker, who, like icon_uk said, they never use.

I think it's a case of a writer being wary and deliberately avoiding using her since the character's known to be trademarked to Marvel, rather than them actually getting to the stage of asking Marvel and being refused.

Furman may have ended things on a poor note with Marvel as he wanted to make a Neo-knights series with her for Marvel, but it didn't work out.

He's worked for them since, though, and I believe has thrown a few pitches for a gen one Death's Head their way which they haven't taken him up on. I don't think there's any bad blood, particularly.

A shame they can't use the Circuit Breaker name, since Circuit Smasher doesn't have the cute pun in the name.

The annoying with Circuit Breaker is while Marvel have the rights to her, they don't even use her.

Remender's robot (Descendents) storyline from Secret Avengers would have been a great place to see her. So many cool robots in the Marvel U that I would like to see her fight.

It definitely is a nostalgic trip down memory lane to see just how bonkers Megatron has been.

I still remember how paranoid Megatron got when Optimus killed himself in the video. Thinking that Prime was still alive.

Not to mention all the stuff in the UK comic. I'm a little disappointed that Megatron's not gotten over that in Regeneration One and isn't acting more like his unhinged, but badass, G2 self, but there's certainly precedent and reason behind his behavior in this first arc. Almost as much precedent as for Ratchet getting dumped on from a great height.

So, this is an entirely different continuity than MTMTE? Since.. Ratchet is alive and well and on the Lost Light, over there.
