So, I recently found a sort of interesting story about the intended origins of Mister Sinister. Careful here, folks, I'm about to seriously block quote Claremont.

"Dave Cockrum and I were over ideas and what we were coming towards was a mysterious young boy - apparently an 11-year-old - at the orphanage where Scott (Cyclops) was raised, who turned out to be the secret master of the place. In effect what we were setting up was a guy who was aging over a lifespan of roughly a thousand years. Even though he looked like an 11-year-old, he'd actually been alive since the mid-century at this point - he was actually about 50 [...] He had all the grown up urges. He's growing up in his mind but his body isn't capable of handling it, which makes him quite cranky. And, of course, looking like an 11-year-old, who'd take him seriously in the criminal community? [...] So he built himself an agent in a sense, which was Mister Sinister, that was, in effect, the rationale behind Sinister's rather - for want of a better word - childish or kid-like appearance. The costume... the look... the face... it's what would scare a child. Even when he was designed, he wasn't what you'd expect in a guy like that."

I actually enjoy this idea of Sinister as a kid trying to be a villain. An immortal kid, living forever, but incapable of growing up. (Plus it explains some of the names he chooses. The Nasty Boys? Really?)

There's a story exploring this concept I wanted the post a bit of today.

The story opens with Scott defending a kid from a bully. A kid named Nate.

Later that night, Scott has a bad dream about his parents' plane crashing/getting attacked by aliens.

Scott confides in the orphanage's new doctor about wanting to be a pilot. This used to be a big thing with Scott. One of the reasons he and Maddie fell in love was over their shared interest in aviation, which is one of the reasons I felt like she was probably the best relationship Scott had. (If you ignore how it ended.) They actually had shared interests, which is something I feel is lacking in his other relationships. What interests does he share with Jean and Emma, outside of being X-men? (This is really a subject for a different post.)

Meanwhile, Nate confronts the bully.

The next morning, the bully ends up on the roof.

Scott attempts to save him, but fails. The new doctor attempts to comfort Scott.

It's an interesting story and a neat look at Scott and Sinister's early relationship. Mr Sinister's interest in Scott is fairly complicated. He's shown concern for his safety before and his feelings towards Scott are fairly open to interpretation.

I've always thought this take on Mister Sinister was quite a bit more interesting than what we wound up getting.
I'm curious though, why did they wind up not going in this direction? And whatever happened to the little boy who was clearly being set up as Sinister? Did they just let him fall by the wayside or something?

According to Comic Book Legends, they're still the same character, but which one was the "real" identity got switched:
Ultimately, though, after Claremont was no longer writing X-Men, later writers completely changed this plot point. The stories from the orphanage are now meant to be Mr. Sinister in disguise as a young boy.

I love Sinester's obsession with Scott. He wants his attention, his mind, his DNA, everything. I am really glad that whatever else has changed over the years that has not.

Very interesting stuff.
I thought Nate was someone who bullied Cyclops, hence why he was so against Maddie naming their son Nathan. Did their relationship change after this?
