rdfox: Joker asking Tim Drake, "'Sup?" from Paul Dini's "Slay Ride" (Default)
From: [personal profile] rdfox
*facepalm* OK, first off, I don't really see ANYONE as trusting Cyke after AvX. But even more jarring to my suspension of disbelief?

That sort of treatment in the People's Republic of Ann Arbor. I live about 30 miles away, and I know Michigan is a blue state (though I suspect that if it weren't for UAW influence, it'd be more purple), but Ann Arbor is so far-left-wing that it pretty much has to turn right to see Berkeley. That cop would be *toast* for the racist overtones of her "you a MUTIE, boy?!" questioning--WITHOUT any intervention, since her superiors that're watching the interrogation would shut it down before they got sued to smithereens and protested out of existence.

She's being racist towards him for being a mutant, not black - you're political points are near moot, since we don't really have a solid idea of how left/right blue/red would matter on someone, or a communities, opinion of mutants.

Also - the world at large doesn't know Scott killed the proffesor, they saw alot of the good he did, and only a sliver of the bad - so many still trust him, and fair enough they should.

"Do not let the HUMANS dictate the course of your life?"

It's ironic that Scott and the mutant hate groups agree that mutants aren't human.

Geez, even various incarnations of the SENTINELS acknowledge that mutants are humans too.

Wether human or not shouldn't be the point. They're both sentient, equal level creatures who should live in peace.

Not being 'human' isn't so bad, if the man with the laser eyes no longer identifies with being human (for the obvious reasons), that's fine, since he's advocating equal treatment - not better or worse.

I think Immonen's style has always been rather like this, although it seems he's got a different inker here than the one he had for New X-Men. It looks good, though; I'm more into Immonen's style than I am Cassaday's, for instance, although I sigh when I think to myself that it'll likely be seven issue before Marvel do their usual dumbass thing of sending the artist to a different book.

The idea of a mutant name is odd, given that it X-men and Co's naming conventions seem to be the same as anybody with superpowers.

Incidentally, has there ever been any word on the ratio of mutants to non-mutant powered individuals?

Yeah, it's diluted because of superheroes, but I do like the idea of them being referred to as "mutant names" rather than codenames.

I think the idea of Scott's mutant rights movement is supposed to echo the more aggressive civil rights fight proposed by Nation of Islam, so the naming convention is also reminiscent of how NOI members are given new Muslim names when they join, to get away from their supposedly "white-given" surnames.

It would be interesting if Scott takes this mutant pride thing even further and insists that mutants drop their "human" names, heh.

Seriously, has anyone addressed the fact of who Scott thought he was benefiting in trying to force the status of mutant on people? Of the potentially millions of lives he's helped throw into disarray, of the people he'll have helped ostracise from people like their friends and family? I actually like this move for Scott. He was an isolationist militant leader doing whatever it takes to try and preserve a handful of people and suddenly that handful swells by an enormous amount. Given the Avengers' actions during AvX and their lack of actions beforehand, the sudden human hate doesn't seem that massively out of place. (Plus the whole "every nation wants to bring Sentinels back even though there are less then five hundred mutants" thing.)

This feels like a natural move and I'm suddenly buying him as this bad-ass dude, something that never really clicked when they were pushing it before. (Post-Apocalypse possession "bad-ass" Scott was just sorta ...not.)

That being said, not digging these new power-sets and there is some really bad handling of Beast's character in this issue. (And he's mutating again? Really?)

I'm split between liking it and...not. Art's very nice.

Also, it feels like half the issue was in the previews. It felt like only 50% of it was stuff I haven't seen before.

Wow... that police station pages were all bad. Not in terms of "unfair" that they rely in the comic, no. More like, they try to make female cop seem like a bad guy for no reason.... guess the scene would have been TOO cliche if they had a blonde man interviewing a black-man. But really? She gets upset because he healed a person and that's why he is in jail? And not for religious reasons, like she thinks he going to try to replace Jesus or something, but takes the "law" route? Is that cop going to be a reoccurring character so we get clarification? How about the guy emitted an EMP in a hospital and inadvertently killed a dozen people and they think he did deliberately?

Oh, and great idea of assaulting a police station, Cy. I mean, you COULD have done something more PRACTICAL in this day in age, like help the guy out on trail, or rescue him on route to jail; but no, you used violence and destruction to help "defend" mutants like religious extremists defend their religion after seeing a stupid web-video online... which reminds me: I heard the guy who made the movie is in jail... the whole situation seems like something Dr. Doom would do after seeing how he was portrayed in Super Hero Squad...

The cop's thinking was clearly meant to be flawed. Chalk it up to either clumsy writing or straw bigotry.

In his defence, there's a big difference between 'offensive video' and 'blatantly false imprisonment'. Scott, right now, isn't in any position to help a guy during trial. All he CAN do is break in and get him out.

On the one hand, I like that Cyclops is portrayed as, while not right, he's well intentioned, and not deliberately trying to hurt any humans. He's not written as well as he could, but I think its just lack of experience on Bendis' part in carrying the character.

On the other, I dislike that he's being a little over the top. The gang sign bit is just narm, but the main issue is that he's talking in a Magneto like manner, when even at his worst Scott was always 'pro-both' rather than just solid 'pro-mutant'. Again though, probably just Bendis being shaky at the start. I'll buy the first arc, see what its like then make my judgement.

Going from the ending, I'm going to guess that Scott's more extreme behaviour will be cut short after a conversation with his younger self. That, or he'll be written as so misguided he doesn't take that right, and settles as an anti-villain. Which, you know, would be bad.

I wish Immonen would learn to draw more than one lady face.

This is what the X-Men should be doing (except for attacking police stations).

Too bad Marvel seem to think these are the villain X-Men.
