flint_marko: (Black Adam & Isis)
[personal profile] flint_marko posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Black Adam expects gratitude, but the protestors run away. He tells Sivana to teach him their language and grabs Sivana's head, teaching himself English.

Later...

Adam tells him that if nothing is done he will wither and it will be painful, but that there will be a cure inside the Rock. But when Adam tries entering, he discovers he can't and realizes the Wizard has appointed a new champion.

Adam finds one of the Seven Deadly Sins living in Brooklyn as a normal human being; the Wizard didn't have enough power to imprison him in the Rock of Eternity, so he made him forget who he was. Adam restores his memories.

I will say something positive!

I love what they've done with the lightning bolt on the costume. Good job on that!

You can get away with a lot if you use Kirby Dots.

Mr. Plutocrat's office apparently contains a mild naughtifying field that works on everyone except him. This made me smile!

A second good thing! The Deadly Sin they're using is not Wrath *or* Lust. I'm sure using Sloth will end up being some major commentary on something or other, but still. Not Wrath or Lust!

Personally, I was kind of disappointed that Sloth didn't just go "No, I'm not locating anything, that sounds like a lot of bother and might involve leaving the couch" and return to watching TV.

That's exactly what I was thinking. "Sounds like a lot of work. Can't we just do an online thing?"

Black Adam needs to read Grapes of Wrath.

I was mostly thinking of the scene when a guy who lost is farm took his gun to the bank and wanted to shoot someone... But he soon figured out that the teller was just working there, and even the director of the bank was just a cog in the system, and eventually he gave up.

I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, yeah, this tells me that we'll probably see the more traditional looking Sivana by the end of this story due to the magic crippling his body. Poor guy.

Yeah, but from my remembrance of DCU proper, it's a family of evil geniuses. (There is no DCnU; nope, nope, nope).

Making even more Post-CoIE Luthor then (which I wouldn't have thought possible), remembering how Green-K exposure destroyed his body.

I do like that Johns is sort-of sticking to the Black Adam he wrote back in JSA, where he's not a mustache-twirling super-villain who has no real motivation--just a flawed man with good intentions who goes over the line to do what he thinks is right.

Sloth out of the various Deadly Sins from their previous appearances (Gotham Central, the Outsiders, Titans, JSA/JLA etc.) always seemed to be the comically mismatched one.

Gluttony, for example, could make people eat each other or eat things until they exploded.

Wrath made people go all 28 Days Later and randomly punch people. In Gotham Central Renee was briefly possessed due to her dormant anger issues, but due to Captain Marvel not being able to stick around to get her magical councilling after he depossessed her, it lead to her rage issues getting worse due to the residual psychic damage.

Lust manipulated sexual desire to cause people to fight over Lust's avatar (Power Girl being one when she was possessed, for example) or just make people have sex with each other regardless of what their feelings would be towards the other person (as seen with Dick and Kori randomly sleeping together whilst in the middle of a search in Titans, and by a Sins-empowered Russian mobster threatening to make a brother and sister have sex with each other in the Outsiders after they were done having sex with their other teammates).

In comparision Sloth doesn't really seem as threatening, as it basically just makes people really lazy. This leads to comical situations where the one possessed by Sloth is too damn lazy to even fight the superheroes attacking him. I suppose that Sloth could make people so lazy they'd just stop breathing because it was too much effort, but then I've never seen it used in such a way... yet.

Except that sloth is actually not caring about anyone or anything. Sloth is when you can't be bothered to take an interest. Sloth is when it's not your problem. Sloth is apathy. Sloth is indifference. As in, "The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference".

Which means that arguably this isn't a proper usage of Sloth, but so it goes.

Being really apathetic, being able to instill apathy in others doesn't exactly make for cinematic supervillainy/magical showpieces though, if it were then Dan Didio's reaction to the Waffles for Steph campaign would be akin to that editted together James Bond/Batman movie being real.

Which is probably why he's the one Adam approaches, even fully realised Sloth's powers would not necessarily affect Adam is instantly as Wrath or Gluttony would, and Sloth knows this, so he'll be more likely to listen to Adam's scheme.

Wouldn't not breathing require more effort than breathing?

I'd say Sloth is extremely dangerous. Just look at what happened to the people of MIranda in Serenity. They stopped caring so much about everything that they just fell down and slowly wasted away, because living was too much effort.

Sloth, I expected to say "Welp sure but I'll just send someone out to do it for me, I'm too lazy to do it myself".

We see nuAdam flat out murder a guy, we see him ally with the Seven Deadlies to remake the world (and doubtless cause a fuckton of collateral damage in the process), and I STILL like him better than nuBilly. I wonder just how much of that is intentional on Johns' part.

Well, Johns has always seemed to prefer Black Adam over Captain Marvel. It's clear as crystal to me since he used to give Black Adam more panel time, character moments and development.

So once again with Geoff Johns, the only interesting and thought out character when he writes any Shazam story is Black Adam? Why am I not surprised? Given what they've done to Billy in this reboot they should have just started the new 52 with Black Adam as the main character of the franchise (which he's been for basically a decade in the DCU at least).
