I assume he's trying to give the kids a chance to turn over the money without it being obvious to everyone around them that they were a fake Santa, such as by drawing attention to them by openly appearing as Daredevil.

He was pretty much living as Daredevil only then. His whole personal life had been wrecked recently by the Kingpin and he was on his way to one of his many nervous breakdowns.

Also, it looks rather cool.

Ah, okay--I was thinking that he could have just done all that as Matt Murdock, but that explains why. Was this after Born Again?

After Born Again, yes. Although Miller wrecked Matt's life, it was Nocenti who showed in depth just how far that destruction went, and how it affected him - physically, professionally, emotionally.

Poor Matt. He has such a blind spot (ba dum psh) when it comes to the church.

I was hoping the nun would be another group of kids in a costume, but still digging the twist we got.

I could never decide whether Matt ended up being an overall good or bad influence on that gang of kids he hung around with during Nocenti's run... As I recall, Matt sometimes seemed pretty unaware of their often dark home lives. And didn't he first win their loyalty by showing them awesome skateboarding tricks?
