Panel 1 (The Ben/Peter about to kiss scene) is from Avenging Spider-Man Annual #1.

Panel 2 (with Peter taking Johnny's pants) is from Amazing Spider-Man #657. It was a "memorial" issue of Spidey after Johnny had just "died." Mostly because Dan Slott wrote the Spider-Man/Human Torch mini and this issue was almost like an epilogue to that.

This knowledge is just adding more fuel to my "Dan Slott is a Johnny/Peter shipper" fire.

Even if you put the homoeroticism aside, that mini is still really fun. So was his run on She-Hulk. Slott can do fun super stuff well.

Man, I almost wish we could just see Peter and Johnny as roommates more permanently. Aside from the slashiness they're just a really fun pairing.

Though I think the time they DID spend sharing a flat did highlighted why it would be an incredibly BAD idea for them to do it.

I understand that Nightcrawler has a mutation leaving him with a far more flexible spine, ligaments, etc. making crouching and other unusual postures naturally comfortable for him, and I can imagine Peter being similar.

But why in the One Above All's name does Peter hang upside down with his legs spread like that? I've never understood that pose.

It's a lot more visually interesting and dynamic for Spider-Man to be hanging upside down and talking to Reed than it would be for him to just stand next to Reed and talk to him. That is the Marvel way of doing things--if you can have a character doing something active instead of something passive, you choose the active pose because it gives more of an impression of action.

Seriously. That's a large part of the gist of How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way. Back then, they felt it helped distinguish themselves and help sell comics to show their characters doing something rather than just standing around.

Okay, not the upside down part. The "Imma kick my legs out!" part. It's not stealthy or anything, it's really strange to me.

Spidey with his knees bent in makes more sense, and it's iconic, but this just looks like he's really trying to emulate a spider shooting web outs its butt.

Balance as much as anything I'd say. He's hanging unsupported by anything other than an incredibly fine, but strong, thread. extending his legs gives him more control over his balance than a pulled in position, where he'd probably end up spinning in place.

I like to imagine it as Peter just being really hyperactive, and assuming various poses/crawling all over everything as Reed tries to talk to him.

I really can't make Johnny/Ben work as a couple in my head, I know they're not "officially" family, but they've got such a strong fraternal bond that romance just seems... not quite right.

Yeah, Johnny and Ben have always had that sibling rivalry thing downpat. And I think the only Marvel character less slashable than Ben is Aunt May.

Where is this megapost? :D I am a big Spidey/Torch shipper (actually did a 30 day OTP art challenge with them) and I adored the mini series so I'll have to pick up #657. :D

I'll never understand the desire to pretend heterosexual characters aren't (is it humor, or...?) but I'm always on board for questioning Thor's manliness.

Lots of reasons! For jokes, of course, or for the sweet, sweet drama that superhero comics are built around. (They are pretty much soap operas with much more violence.)

And, perhaps the most obvious reason of all, for the sexiness. Lots of people have their bells rung by the thought of Johnny and Pete playing pelvic polo in the back of the Fantasticar.
