Another excellent scene from Mark Gruenwald's run on Captain America, taking place after Operation Galactic Storm, with Cap beginning to doubt his own values and his ability to inspire heroes:

Context: a group of Avengers, led by Iron Man, voted to execute the Supreme Intelligence during the Shi'ar/Kree War. Cap was against it and that led to some conflicts within the team. Back on Earth he decides to give a lecture on ethics, but:

Clint Barton, one of Cap's oldest friends, decides to help him unwind by taking him a sleazy bar:

And then Tony Stark shows up to have an intimate talk with Steve:

Quasar excused himself too as he had "Protector of the universe" business, but had the courtesy to tell Cap about it personally, and Cap reassured him that he definitely didn't need a lecture on ethics.

Love al the cameo's in the bar; Steed, Mrs Peel, Mark Gruenwald himself, Bogart, Popeye, Groucho, The Addams Family, Minnesota Fats, to name but a few.

(and I do feel that Steve let Tony off lightly...)

Apparently Clint missed the memo that it was cosplay night at the bar, or he and Cap could have gone in uniform.

Oh man, I miss Gruenwald. You just don't see that level of follow up in comics these days.

I don't think WTSH is onomatopeia. I think it's an acronym.

Well, Thor's Suddenly Here.
Wow! Thor's Somewhat Hairier!
Whenever Thou Seekest Heroes...

An acronym is a word formed by an abbreviation and has to be pronounceable, so WTSH is only an abbreviation.

(So, as I understand it, WHO for the World Health Organisation is an acronym, but EEC for the European Economic Community is not)

Is it me or is that dive bar not really that scary? Dunno, I guess it's kind of seedy but not horribly so.

For the record, the worst bar I've ever been in had bright fluorescent lighting. Two seconds in there and I understood why bars are always dark. Drinking in there was horrifying in an existential sense.

No dive bar in America, anywhere, even New York City, has that many guys hanging around in suits and ties. Unless it's a mob bar, in which case I'm not sure that Steve and Clint ever would have made it in the door, unless they were made as Avengers, in which case it would be empty.

I can't help but read Thor's line on entering the room in the voice of the Brave and the Bold Aquaman.

Hm, I wouldn't be surprised if this single scene is how the idea of Civil War was born.

No, that would require Millar needing to have some idea of continuity and a lack of a desire to uncomfortably shoe-horn heroes into ill-advised political leanings so he can make some more 'AMERICA SUXX YO!' potshots.

I do believe it is. And unless I miss my guess (and it's quite possible I do) I think he's chatting up Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane (Unless they're some other old Hollywood types that I'm not immediately recognizing).

But yes, this is a very, very weird "lowlife" bar, given its...colorful clientele.

Yep--Cranston's (or Allard-as-Cranston's) long aquiline schnozz is the giveaway.
