A children comic by Rutu Modan



Rutu Modan, best known for her 2008 Eisner winning book "Exit Wounds" create a children comic story called "Maya make a mess" (originally in hebrew סעודה אצל המלכה -"feast at the Queen") the book was a best seller here in Israel ranking in the number one for many weeks in the kids and teen category .
The story about Maya (in hebrew her name is Nina) that get unexpected invitation to dine with the Queen. she have a bad table manners at home, what will happend when she will dine with the Queen?
The story behind how this book came about is that when Rutu was little and ate without manners in the meals her father asked her "What would you do if the Queen (of England) invited you to dine at the palace?"
"it was this kind of a question that after it you dont have anything to say " rutu said.
The years past and then Rutu now a parent herself saw that her daughter and her friend from kindergarten who came to visit eating their food in a very messy metter so she ask them the question her father ask her when she was little, to her suprise the girl reply: “Well! It just so happens that the Queen is a VERY good friend of mine, and she told me that I eat perfectly.” and the idea was born.
the book is NOT an educational book about table manners. it is actually just a little, fun, nice story.

Yes, it is a seemingly strange scene. although in the Hebrew version he actually said: "its a long flight, you will be hungry again". I guess they change it so it will be more global without telling how much time the flight going to be.

I relate very strongly with this. I had a very matronly British stepmother to teach me table manners when I was growing up in England. She really did train me with the hypothetical scenario that I might one day have dinner with the Queen. XD

but i agree, and that also what rutu said she did when she was little: put ketchup on everything! so she put it in the comic.
