One Perfect Moment - Jono and Warren

If I have a perfect moment, this one be one of them. One of those air punching moments and a "oh hells yes!" It's not anything personal against Warren, a character I rather like, but that this moment seemed a perfect response to Chuck Austen's particular direction in personal relationships and a rebuttal to the whole "X-men as family" ethos, which stopped being true some time in the early nineties. Or maybe it's just the art that makes this so... satisfying.

I think the fact that this is one of my perfect moments shows what a mean-spirited little a-hole I can be sometimes.

I just really don't like Warren/Paige. It's sketchy.

Man, I don't know if I even like Warren in relationships. I prefer him being charming and sunny and flirting with everybody.

I loved him with the lady cop in X-Factor, the one that had a little boy and didn't take crap from him when he got all emo just because he was blue.

What happened to her? Was she shipped off to limbo as soon as Angel got 'pretty' again?

Charlotte Jones? Last time she appeared was in the Decimation one-shot by Caremont, I think and before that Claremont's last Uncanny run, although she cropped up in Austen's run too, briefly. She's around, but only the occasional mention or one or two page cameo these days.

Was she a mutant? I thought she wasn't... and I loved her and Warren together so much. I never even knew why they broke up.

She's one of those members of the X-men's extended cast who very occasionally pops up, usually when Claremont's on the book and remembers, hey, there's a scene with a cop, I can use Charlotte, rather than just inventing some new character for the purpose.

It never sat right with me... I wasn't paying all that close of attention to it at the time, but it seemed like in a very short span of time she went from 16 and with Jono, to a forced 19 and with Angel. What's her current situation I wonder?

I believe the last time she cropped up was in SI: X-Men, basically flirting with Warren in the middle of a fight. In fact the whole exchange between them in that issue made me cringe. It went along the lines of Warren asking her how her love life was and Paige telling him that they could go down to base and find out.

To be fair, they were supposed to be acting insufferable, laying it on thick, etc, as it all turned out to be set-up so that Jono would get recruited by Weapon X after a clear break with the X-men, but...

Well, Wolverine and Chamber were in on it. It's never quite so clear whether Warren knew he was going to get lamped like that or whether no acting was required.

Warren with Paige and Warren without Paige oddly seem like entirely different characters to me. I dislike her and I just can't like him with her.

So let me get this straight. I didn't really follow the X-verse at the time, but Paige chose to break up with Jono of her own free will, and Jono gets away with a sucker punch to her new (admittedly significantly older) boyfriend, who is rather decently trying to offer an olive branch?

I may not care for Angel/Husk much, but I see nothing remotely admirable or likeable about Jono here either.

Twas a deliberate act, on the part of Jono and the X-team, for plot reasons. So, he didn't quite "get away" with anything.

That having been said, Jono is not usually remotely admirable or likeable in his interaction with girls - he's a bit of a shallow prick, actually.

I think the OP mostly likes this because of the very clear rebuttal of the supercilious "X-men are just a big, happy family" thing going on here. That's why I like it :P

The X-Men aren't a big happy family--they're a big, crazy dysfunctional family with tons of little cliques where everyone kind of makes fun of each other but will protect each other fiercely if need be and has tons of fun when they all get together and let their collective hair down--kind of like how real giant unconventional extended families are.

Or at least how mine is.

Which is I think why I like Jono's very clear rebuttal of the whole idea of the idea that since they're X-men, clearly they should never have problems with each other or argue or feel bad or anything.

You forgot the part where Jono left her in emotional limbo, told her he loved her then decided that it was never going to work and gave her the cold shoulder for weeks, never actually resolved that, told her he had feelings for her in a letter he wrote when Generation X disbanded, then went to London and had a very public sex affair with a Britney clone, semi-cold shouldered Paige when they met again and then went off to try and solve the murder of a bunch of mutant students at NYU because he thought the only witness was hot.

I love Jono to pieces, but what you have to remember is that he's an immense jerk with women.

I've always had this feeling when reading the whole Warren/Paige affair was that Austen REALLY liked Paige, but disliked Jono and how he treated her thus he was one upping Jono by throwing her together with Warren.

I dunno if I'm making any sense here, but I see it too often in fanfiction when writers tend to break up ships if they felt one half of the pair was mistreating the other.

I don't think he had any feelings for Paige initially one way or another, really. In interviews he stated that he was told by editorial to use one of the Gen Xers and since he didn't have a handle on Jono, he was taken off the table in the BKV miniseries.

His first request was to use Monet, with the intention of killing her off in the Dominant Species storyline, but that was nixed (alledgedly, and somewhat ironically, because editorial apparently told him killing a PoC character was not acceptable - ironic since they supposedly actually encouraged him to kill off one of their few Latino characters a few issues later because Skin's powers were similar to Mr Fantastic's) so he picked Paige instead. How/why he decided to put her in a relationship with Warren hasn't been touched on, that I've read.

He did state he grew to like the character when writing her so she was saved from death early on, I believe.

There are so many things wrong with this. The art, the ship. Everything. I've loved Warren from the 90s, the good ol' classic beau who had Psylocke at his side. Now though? Ugh, the writers are just making him soap opera trash.

I really hated the whole Paige/Warren thing. I always felt it was a horrible rebound (even if it wasn't), that was done in absolutely poor taste.

Good grief, yes. Looking at that third panel, I want to knock those Crest smiles right off their jock/cheerleader faces and demand to know what they did with the characters that I used to like, or at least didn't mind.
