Maybe this will lead to the reveal of Selina having a "Nine lives like a cat" resurrection/healing power (like she seemed to have in Batman Returns).

It wouldn't be the first time she survived something she really shouldn't have as a normal human. Pre-Flashpoint she survived having her heart cut out by Hush.

Fridge, meet Selina. Selina, meet Fridge.

Also, this new universe seems to go out of its way to piss all over Bruce Wayne, doesn't it? Dead parents, dead Robins, dead Batman, Inc. associates, dead son, and now TWO dead girlfriends in less than a month. If this keeps up, Alfred could be next.

I doubt it; with her own comic, and her ties with Batman? Unless there's going to be a new Catwoman avenging the old one...

Nyaaaah.

Nice cliffhanger, though. Either she's badly injured, or the injury is somehow being faked, despite the fact she and the other JLA-ers weren't expecting that particularly.

My first thought was that this could be a variation on how Vic Sage survives a similar point-blank shot to the head at the beginning of the O'Neil/Cowan Question reboot in the 80s.

But, really, I don't care. The current regime at DC has made it difficult, if not impossible, for me to care about almost any of their characters, because (and Marvel is guilty of this, too--see Avengers Arena, for example) DC is willing to do anything and everything to their characters to get a sales bump. They had Selina go through stuff at the beginning of nu52 that read almost like a parody of sexploitation fanservice, and now this. It's the same company that set up a 900 number to vote on whether or not to have a teenage character beaten to death by a crowbar, folks.

On a related note, I have to say that the costume design for the villain who shoots her (The Outsider? I think?) is stunningly awful, both in design and execution. Brett Booth really needs to sit down and look at how people actually wear bowler hats before he ends up drawing the guy with half a cannonball on his head again...

Also: nice to notice that the issue's events also included Catwoman being forced to unzip her collar and show off a little bit of cleavage a few pages before the kill-shot.

Note that this is an Amanda Waller team, and as per my Suicide Squad post the other week, the Wall has the Samsara Serum. She could bring people back from the dead left, right and sidewise if she wanted to. Just sayin'.

she may not be dead yet, just near death. Waller has the serum so she could be back by the end of the next issue, also I think that guy might be a joker from an alternate earth given the multiple globes and the map of the batcave.

But by that reasoning, there would be no point in ever putting characters in mortal danger in flashback stories because we know they'll survive. But writers do that all the time and it works and readers often respond positively to such stories anyway because people don't just read action-adventure to see whether characters survive but *how* they survive. When Vyndktvx has Superman powerless, dying from kryptonite poisoning, and beaten down (to use a recent example), it's not the question of "Will he really kill Superman?" that keeps us flipping the pages. It's "How will Superman get out of this?" "How will Catwoman get out of this?"

So, to start off...Damien has been killed, in one of the bat-books, Bruce's girlfriend has been killed off, and the woman who is often Batman's lover...has been killed off.

This being DC, we all know this isn't going to stick, but the fact they pulled this, is still blindingly stupid.

And this is why Waller having a resurrection serum in a book called the Suicide Squad is such an awful idea. If death has no meaning in a team with a high mortality rate then it removes so much of the drama.

Okay, admittedly Catwoman being killed did come as a complete surprise, no doubt about that. But of course, it would've been far more effective if Catwoman didn't already have an ongoing series currently being published by DC with no signs of it being cancelled in the near future. That alone is enough to tell readers her death isn't going to stick for very long, aside from the fact she's also one of DC's more popular female characters to boot.

Also, we know that there's another woman calling herself "Selina Kyle" running around, as hinted in Catwoman #0, JLA #1, and JLA #3. So it's possible it was this other "Selina Kyle" who was actually killed.

(Babbling below. Scroll to the bottom for the summary.)

Okay, look. I'm calling BS.

Not because of the whole "There's no way Catwoman is going to stay dead thing." No, I'm already at peace with that. nuDC has utterly failed to even inspire enough to make me get irritated that.

No, I'm annoyed because of the physics, here. Catwoman is in a heavy wooden chair, made out of what appears to mostly be 4x4 posts, with some other boards sizes, manacles, chain, and randome chunks a steel. (I'm guessing it's supposed to be like an electric chair?) That thing's gotta weigh 80 pounds, plus. Heck, just the raw lumber puts it at over 50.

Add in Catwoman's weight, which we'll assume to be an even 100 pounds, because comics.

That kind of weight, in that kind of a chair, does not just tip over backwards from something as small as the momentum from a bullet. Especially not from a bullet that leaves such a nice, neat little entry and exit wound.

It just... doesn't WORK.

They could have had her slump over in the chair or something, but.... No.

teal deer: Physics don't work that way, even in comics. Bad DC. Bad. No cookie.
