This is moment from Quasar issue 24 during the Cosmos in Collision event. This moment was the first thing I thought of when I heard villains being awesome.

For context Maelstrom has killed Quasar and stolen his Quantum Bands, Stolen the secret of Cosmic awareness from Eon, stopped the Earth's rotation and set in motion the collapse of the universe into a single anomalous point to flip the universal order so Oblivion will come out on top. (Though in reality he would have usurped Oblivion if it worked)

He's currently visiting cosmic beings to tell them they have no chance to stop him so in these two pages he drops in on Thanos since the Infinity gems may have more power than the Quantum Bands.

Heh, Maelstrom just dissed Thanos as his most omnipotent. Guy has guts... no brains, but guts.

I'm reminded a little of the Golems in the Discworld, who are a thing the lightningbolt throwing chief god of the Discworld isn't too happy about; ceramic aetheists.

This seems more like Thanos getting underwritten, though. I mean, "I thought I saw , him...heard him..." is not what you say when you've got the Space and Time Gems to see through, you know? Main-event Thanos was much more comfortably omniscient when he had the Gauntlet (except when he was being convinced to stupidify himself for Mistress Death's sake.)

I'm not saying that Maelstrom can't be written to be Thanos' near-equal in power, if that's what the writer wants--just that Gauntlet-wielders don't usually seem this baffled even when they meet their equals or superiors.

I love Quasar and Mark Gruenwald, but this wasn't the most consistent writing.

I wonder about the behind the scenes stuff with this... Quasar was taken out so ridiculously easy in Infinity Gauntlet to boot.

Ironic as I recently got to read The Thanos Quest and Infinity Gauntlet and wow were those awesome books, especially IQ. That was an event book done well and it took a risk that I thought was worth it. The star(s) of the book wasn't even the Avengers or hell any hero really. It was freakin Thanos!

I've always wondered what exactly made Anomaly so special among the cosmics that his power plus cosmic awareness made Maelstrom so powerful that he fared better here than the freaking Eternity.

Dunno, maybe it's explained better in the story.

Yet all of those are just parts of what Eternity is. In beating Eternity Thanos took down all that, and everything else included. But Maelstrom still did better.
