Why would you put Bruno Mannheim on life support and not just kill him?

Perhaps killing is a line that Clark even in the "Destroyer" persona won't cross. If we are dealing with a case of mind control that makes Superman behave in a decidedly un-heroic manner, it could mean that his true personality is breaking through. Of course, that is assuming that Superman and the Destroyer are the same Person, and that it is not just a big case of misdirection from the writer. Guess we will have to wait for the next issue.

Does not look like the Destroyer costume. Actually, it kinda looks like Cap in bad lighting. It looks like he has a shield on his back, and the color themes that we can see match.

Except that the Destroyer wields a shield similar to Captain America's. One can see it on the scans, but not very well. I overlooked it the first time too, but the Destroyer uses the shield to decapitate Toyman's robot.

Ah, did not see that. But the suit looks bluer in the crop-shot. Destroyer scans look grey, had me fooled.

As an object lesson to the rest? It's easy to forget a corpse, but a living reminder is ongoing.

A living reminder of what, though? If he's in a coma, he may as well be a corpse as far as the public's concerned, and if he's conscious, he's probably organizing his terrible revenge already. The Destroyer hasn't (I think) accomplished some Darkseid-style punishment where Mannheim's on public display and constantly suffering medically untreatable agonies. It'd be safer to just kill the guy in some flashy, painful manner and share the video online.

Besides, you know he'll come back as a cyborg or learn mystic martial arts or undergo metagene activation treatments or some damn thing, at which point he'll be even eviller. You don't have to be genre-savvy to notice that suffering and mutilation have terrible records as rehabilitative techniques in the DCU.

(Of course, this is nowhere near the first or the worst example of Why Don't You Just Shoot Him? out there. I just find it funny that the Destroyer's being presented as a dark-but-tempting antiheroic alternative to Supes because he almost kills villains.)

This reminds me of that old Superman story where he ended up with a split personality and trying to murder Clark Kent.

"It's a sad reflection on our times that we put so much trust in a non-elected vigilante."

Damn straight. We need to start holding vigilante elections, right friggin' now. ;

I really don't think people putting all their faith in an unelected vigilante is a "sad reflection on our times" any moreso than it is of literally any other time in history. If it were people putting their faith in a morally dubious elected thug, then that might be closer to current events and thus, actually a reflection of the times. One wonders how Lois even got her job, spewing cliches like that, next she'll be writing about how lazy and entitled Millenials are.

It's a sad reflection on *her* times, not ours. Lois Lane, who currently exists in a world where the public putting large amounts of trust in unelected vigilantes is a relatively recent development, is making a comment about that world.

"I'm responsible for over seventy percent of the *bad stuff*?"

"You know, like crime, and..."

"Crime and what? There must be something else, or you would have just said crime."

"Well, like, corruption... And graft?"

"You have no idea what you meant, do you? Where did you even get the number seventy percent?"

"Look, you're a bad guy, I'm going to beat you into a pulp so you'll be stuck in the hospital. Is where I got my statistics really important?"

"And another thing- if I was responsible for more than seventy percent of the 'bad stuff,' that wouldn't make me one of the top gangsters, that would make me the goddamn King of Crime in Metropolis. You're just pulling numbers out of thin- aaagggk my spine!"

I'm surprised more superheroes don't lobby for prison reform. "I just put that escaped supervillain back in jail last week. How the hell did he escape yet again?"
