Been waiting for this issue to age abit so I can post these images.  First, let's open with a bang, shall we?

Metroplex vs. the NecroTitan!  Whoever wins, the terrain loses! Now, on to our show...

Prior to this, Orion Pax's squad was in the Dead Universe fighting Nova Prime. They're still there, and things are coming to a head. It turns out, Nova Prime's reality bending abilities here extend to his own body! At least to a point. (If the text in the top left does not always make sense, remember we're flipping scenes here. Megatron is busy being up to epic shenanigans on Cybertron.)

"...I endorse it."  Enter, Rodimus with Inspirational Speechifying.

"Oohhhh... so unwise."

Well... it may have been obvious that he'd take the name back at some point, but DAMN!! if that ain't an impressive way to showcase it!

I love that this shows Hot Rod's continued growth as a person, too - and how badly he needs a figure like Optimus Prime in his life, to help give him a standard to apply himself towards, as well as the motivation not to backslide, which is so easy for him.

It's also nice to see SOMEONE finally snapping Orion/Optimus out of his pathological self-deprecation.

The difference though is that Optimus knew about the other Primes being corrupt before he took on the mantle. It's only recently that he'd come to feel that he couldn't overcome the legacy.

maybe he knew about Zeta, but how would he know about Nova, and have they even shown any evidence the Primes before Nova were really corrupt?

This isn't the first time he's taken on Nova Prime. The first time they met was back in 2009, when Nova first returned from the Dead Universe and tried to murder the main universe. Before that, Optimus believed that Nova was the man that had ended an age of war and united Cybertron into a single civilisation, one of enlightenment and scientific discovery.

He then discovered that Nova was actually a racist psychopath who planned to destroy the lesser lifeforms in the universe and impose his divine will over existence. And that was BEFORE he fused with a Dead Dimension. The mission of peaceful exploration that Nova was lost on was, in reality, the first phase of his planned conquest of the galaxy.

Every Prime between Nova and Optimus has been terrible. The best of them was a racist and corrupt politician. Optimus's direct predecessor decided to solve his planets energy crisis by murdering a large percentage of the population and using their sparks as power sources for weapons to murder more people. And Optimus has had to deal with the problems all of them caused. Hell, he killed the last one himself.

Optimus has had doubts about both the legacy of Primes and himself ever since. Not long after that, the Decepticons launched an offensive that killed a large percentage of the Autobots and left entire worlds in ruins. After four million years of war, both sides were left as nothing more then tattered, exhausted armies that were left fighting over a dead world, all the original motivations and reasons for the war replaced with 'we fight them because we fight them'

And then the Matrix of Leadership was drained and left a dead husk. At which point, the various civilians that had fled the war began to return to Cybertron, and most of them, having nothing to go by but their ruined world, saw him as another Zeta or Sentinel. And I think Optimus was tired enough he did too, just a little. Four million years, and he'd achieved nothing but a lot of dead people and a ruined world. (Which is wrong, but hey, the guy was tired.)

So, he stepped aside. He left Bumblebee and Rodimus in command, and left Cybertron, rather then be used as a symbol for the civil unrest. As shown above, he even gave up the name Optimus, believing the Prime lineage to be beyond saving. And every single Autobot knew he was wrong. When the Autobots in space needed help, they went looking for Orion Pax. Because they knew Prime would know what to do. As Rodimus said above.

As for Primes before Nova? We've never seen any. We don't really have confirmation there were any, for that matter.

In some continuities, Nova was one of the original thirteen, wasn't he? Technically, I suppose that should mean he is in EVERY continuity, but I don't think they really pay that much attention to that stuff.

... think if Nova had a different face, Prime would demand to have it and tear it apart with glowing red hot hand-hooks?
