Am I the only one who is getting tried of Tony being almost written like a villain recently?
I mean seriously there's this (although to be fair he's not really a villain), his portrayal in New Avengers, and now the upcoming Superior Iron Man where he will make some "questionable decisions." The way Marvel's been portraying him lately has really turned me off of the character.

No, you aren't. Marvel seems hell bent on turning him into a villain though.

I think Marvel has decided that there are no heroes or villains, just people dealing the hands they're dealt.

Do Marvel writers just not like Tony Stark for some reason? Like anyone that wealthy just can't be a good guy?

During CIVIL WAR it was "Rich people are evil" thing for everyone on the pro-reg side. The noble anti-reg heroes were all from the streets. For reals, dawg.

In all fairness he was originally created to be everything that the teenagers of the 1960s were meant to dislike, being a rich war profiteer who was directly arming the US military to fight in Vietnam... though that was done so that they'd have a character they should automatically hate, and then mess with them by making them feel sorry for him.

These days, people seem to be adverse to the sympathetic part, but least due to the part about him being trapped in a metal suit for the rest of his life has been retconned out decades ago.

He's portrayed better in his own series; while it notes that there's many reasons to dislike him, he's consistently heroic, if incredibly stubborn.

Though, people are seriously split on it, which really surprised me since I've enjoyed it for the most part.

Hey, y'know what makes a world feel big and vibrant? When all the characters, no matter how unrelated they are initially, are revealed to know each other intimately through a series of unlikely links! Doesn't make the world feel small and artificial at all!

I expect this to be revealed as a shaggy dog story in the end, but as it stands, I think this story is subpar.

Stark and Banner are both genius-level scientists who were building hi-tech weapons for the U.S. government at the same period of time. I don't see how it's contrived or artificial that they'd have interacted.

You know, I actually do think the movies are largely at fault. They're the ones who came up with the whole "Tony Stark used to be an amoral asshole before he became Iron Man" origin, which was never in the comic, or at least didn't used to be.

Wait, I'm confused. If Tony Stark was hired by the government to tweak with the bomb, then why does he have to do it in secret? And if he did do it secretly, how did he manage to get paid, as we saw on that invoice in a previous issue, since from the government's perspective it'd look like he didn't do anything?

He's drunk enough to think it would be a good idea to mess with the bomb inebriated, but lucid enough to realize that the government wouldn't share that opinion. They're paying him for his insights when he's (relatively) sober.

Wow, the events leading up to Bruce getting blown up are becoming as busy as the lead up to Bruce Wayne's parents getting shot. With DC's Bruce his parents were shot at the same night as,
- Thomas Wayne was going to launch an investigation into Bruce's school when it became clear that the headmaster was a nutcase who beat Bruce for no reason (Batman: Gothic).
- Martha Wayne was going to reveal her report based on her private investigation into the child sex trade in Gotham (Batman: the Ultimate Evil).
- Thomas told Bruce not to listen to Rock on the radio, causing Bruce to hate the musical genre FOREVER (Fortunate Son).
- It was Christmas/Martha's birthday, and she'd gotten the infamous pearls as a gift from Thomas/Bruce/both of them.
- Thomas was running for Mayor, and wanted to take his family out on the town for one last time before buckling down to defeat Mayor Oswald Cobblepot. At the same time, Cobblepot planned to have Martha and Bruce abducted in order to force Thomas to pull out of the race, only for the plan to be derailed by them going out the wrong door and getting shot by a random mugger. (Earth One).

While Marvel's Bruce's origin includes things like a guy who blamed himself for the Hulk's existance due to daring Rick Jones into driving onto the bomb testing area, which lead him to founding a charity that clears up the wreckage from Hulk's numerous rampages; EvilFutureHulk Maestro getting sent back in time, only to land on the bomb and get vaporised by the blast; a whole mess involving Russian spies; and now this!

And (my favourite in terms of twisting the knife) the only reason they went to the cinema at all was that Bruce had thrown a tantrum at not getting the Christmas gift he wanted. As the gift he had been given was a family heirloom which he had then thrown against the wall, breaking it, Thomas had shouted at him, and the cinema trip was an attempt by Thomas to apologise for losing his temper. (Batman: The Brave and the Bold)

Maaaaaybe I'm being overly optimistic here but I think there's gonna be a reveal that even Tony and Bruce don't know the whole picture and that it just LOOKS like Tony sabotaged the bomb...or maybe they'll find out someone manipulated him into doing it. To me it feels like they're playing off audience expectations too well...we all know Tony Stark's a self-absorbed arrogant jerk at times so it's not too much of a stretch to believe he could do something like this, but I think Mark Waid is a good enough writer that he wouldn't want to tarnish him with something this big. His writing to me has always been much more optimistic than it is about playing to cynicism.

Also that scene where Tony takes a photo really stands out as weird. I can't see him doing that just because he was drunk, to me there has to be more motive behind it.

I have to say I'm getting less 'Tony is evil' vibes than everyone else is. He was supposed to have been a twat before he became Iron Man, and this is clearly set before that happened (or at least I think it is), so I can accept this as one of many dickish things he did during that time.

The stuff in other books mind, those are pretty assy though.

Yeah during the Avengers the Crossing event it was revealed he was a brainwashed Mole from Kang from the very beginning. They ended up with the Tony of another reality who was a teen until Heroes reborn. Supposedly when Franklin Brought the heroes back that Tony was merged with the essence of the original one.

This tony seems to have turned into this on his own this time. No brainwashing required.
