"In 2008, I believe my initial pitch to William (Christensen, Avatar EIC) was a global power play between undercover metal bands, Harvard alums and Afro-French aristocrats, but he begged me to give him something he could actually sell, so I said, 'How about Zeus killing atheists?'" - Jonathan Hickman

I was thinking the exact same thing. Zeus doesn't think this way. The Greeks didn't think this way about their gods.

I disagree. Long drawn out posturing by godlike being telling doubter/resister to beg for mercy? This is just Kneel before Zod without the payoff of the villain getting his comeuppance.

As far as I recall, Zeus in classical mythology was less concerned with mortals giving him unconditional obedience and more with sexually assaulting women (mortal or otherwise). And while I realize that it's "in" nowadays to make sure readers or viewers know villains are truly villainous by having them be bigoted on top of homicidal...even so, Zeus's ableist ranting here strikes me as gratuitous.

Soooooo.... what the Hell is the point of this?

I mean, Zeus shows up to kill Atheists? That seems.... kinda petty.

Granted, the Greek Gods WERE very petty assholes, which is kind of part of the reason that Christianity replaced them. But seriously? I'd think the fact you've proven Atheists as being wrong by your mere existence would be enough. But no, lets go stomp a dude in a wheelchair's head.

Seriously, the only thing that could pick this up is if it ends with a fight between Zeus and Mr. Terrific. And Mr. Terrific wins. With SCIENCE!

Actually, going by the Amazon blurb for volume 1, that sounds not too far from what we might get.

"When faced with the divine, can mortal weapons put an end to the second coming of the gods? After the missiles fly and the tanks roll, the gods still remain. As the world tumbles toward apocalypse, a group of scientists seek to do the impossible ...give birth to the gods of science. As the greedy deities battle for absolute rule over the material world, a new divinity arises and the world will tremble beneath the war of the gods!"

So, science gods to battle ancient gods?

The cover: What a perfectly pretentious Hickman title and cover design that is.

After the first caption, I realized I was actually fed up with Hickman. I considered just closing the page.

And then I read it anyway, which made it worse.

Well, now I have a very clear idea exactly what kind of writer Hickman is. You know why Warren Ellis walks off books after a few issues? Because he's not trying to dilute his big ideas. We don't need a bunch of imitators to dilute the Ellis style for him. (And the climax of this was just disappointingly executed. Big whoop.)
Edited (Not that this is an Ellis idea. Ellis probably would have done better. It's an imitation Ellis idea.) Date: 2014-08-06 05:20 am (UTC)

While I'd never stoop so low as to buying it myself, I can't NOT read Hickman's stuff when it shows up here, despite knowing how much it'll piss me off. It's like watching a really horrible train wreck. You know it's going to be horrific in so many ways, and deep down you know it will taint your mind forever in ways you will never be able to wipe clean, but it's such a spectacle in awfulness in and of itself that you can't look away.

Also I just get so much joy out of mocking him. That usually helps dull the pain.

Excuse me while I yawn at something Jonathan Hickman has written...again.

His Fantastic Four worked because the FF works well with verbose, high concept stories. His Avengers is boring because there's not enough smashy-smashy. From all I can tell, this isn't much better than revenge porn.

Seriously, unless the Titans are attacking, all Zeus has ever cared about is getting his freak on. I'm not seeing any of that here. It's just another fucking mad god being a mad god, and it's boring as fuck.

Date: 2014-08-06 10:14 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] shadur
If it's "revenge porn" then why does Hickman feels the need to exact revenge on a Stephen Hawking ersatz?

Also, does Hickman know /this/ little about greek mythology? The greek gods didn't really *do* the crush-beneath-my-foot thing. When a mortal got intolerably uppity they pulled out the creative punishments -- self-replenishing all-the-intestine-you-can-eat eagle buffet, turned into a stag to be hunted by your own hunting dogs, drown in six inches of water because you fell in love with your own reflection, turned into a spider or a giant salt-lick, or even just their favorite standby of madness.

This is just... I don't know, I don't really have the words for how pitiful it is.

I don't know, the comicbook industry is such that some creators take to their jobs like the scientists from Jurassic Park, so concerned with whether they can do something to stop and think whether they actually should (logic the sentiment I don't agree with within the context of the movie, by the by).

Like, the original plan in the Authority storyline where the G8 nations replace the team with superheroes that are more their "style", the original plan was that the villains would dig up the corpse of the recently dead Jenny Spark in order to have sex with it... which was given a firm NO by Wildstorm.

This is kind of stating the obvious, but he kind of is in nearly every work of fiction he appears in. Heck, even in Disney's Hercules he's an insensative ass about Hades being stuck in the Underworld most of the time.

Hell, over in DC when Wonder Woman completed her first Big Superhero Moment (stopping Ares from starting a nuclear war and killing the world... by pointing out that if he did, then there'll be no more war and he'd eventually fade to nothingness like the other gods), Zeus decided that an appropriate reward was to beam himself down to Themyscira and have try to have sex with her against her will... and then sentenced her to a series of lethal punishments due to her "insulting" him by not wanting to get raped by her deity.

This was several decades prior to the revelation that she was his daughter, obviously, though that wouldn't have stopped mythological Zeus anyway.

This kind of reads like a Garth Ennis script without the humour or humanity, or a Warren Ellis script typed when he was in a particularly foul mood about something.

Seen it done better before elsewhere, is what I'm saying.

Does make me wonder if they're going to actually have a representative of the Abrahamic God show up to tell Zeus to get his rapist ass out of his City. Or Avatars of any of the other millions of religions or faiths around the world showing up claiming to be the One True Creator of the Universe.

Also, a minor thing, but if that's ACTUALLY meant to be Stephen Hawking, he's currently unable to even type these days (I think that I read he has something beamed onto his eye and controls stuff from there or something), so him actually talking would be out of question.

To give you an idea of their other content, they also published Crossed, Neonomicon, Black Gas (I think), and a Caligula comic that features a demonic horse that rapes people.

You know what would have made this a million times better? If all of a sudden Not Hawking's chair popped out some micro rocket launchers and blasted Zeus with them, then popped out a jetpack.

Then it would be a fight between Zeus and Jetpack Stephen Hawking.

Hawking wouldn't need to win, but at least it would be something better than this.

There is a really big hole in the logic behind this that no one else has pointed out yet. Most religious people don't believe in Zeus anymore than Atheists. Why is he just being a bit of a dick to the Vatican but curb stomping disabled atheists?

Perhaps he blames Christianity for supplanting his pantheon... and the Vatican is the best known established Christian location.
